Well, my interest in this ereader has just increased.
They have already ported fingerterm to the device, giving you access to a on-device Linux command line if you manage to build and install it.

Wow - this is way cool, I need to try this out. I've been toying with mine since I got it (that was two days ago), and though connecting it through the USB cable and accessing the browser interface does work, it's not exactly convenient - I get any files I upload to it in the home directory, and I have to drag and drop each one individually.

The device is very exciting, but it does have a few UI issues, in my opinion. It may be that I missed some options, but I'd really like to be able to customize some options (like, my favorite pen configurations - each time I select a different tool in the drawing menu, and go back to the pen, I have to reset the pen type and thickness!), and the PDF reader isn't exactly the best I've seen; if there is an easy way to navigate a large PDF book, I haven't found it.

So, if some hackers get at it, some of the software issues might get solved, and then it will really be an incredible device.

If ssh works, then scp and sftp are likely to work, as well. If so, you can use those commands directly from the command-line, or use one of the many file browser applications that use them under the hood.

Ordered mine on Nov 15 and got the shipment notice today, for delivery on Monday. Less than two weeks so I guess they have their shipping problems sorted out.

Monday will be distracting -- every time I head a truck come down the street I'll be waiting for the doorbell to ring -- and disappointed when it doesn't

Would be nice if is supported Calibre but it looks like you can get stuff on/off without using their proprietary software. My fear is that they don't succeed and their software won't run come Mac OS 10.15 or Windows 12...

Is this thread a correct place to discuss usage of the reMarkable, or should it get a dedicated thread?

If there is a way to somehow configure options for the reading/writing software, like default choices for pen/pen style/pen width/pen color, I'd like to know them... at the moment I have to re-select my favorite style after each time I use a different tool, like the eraser. It seems likely that the software has some option file that lets one choose this behavior... (if not, then this means we have to wait until reMarkable add such possibilities in an update...)

  1. You can't set pen defaults in the first version of the software
  2. You cannot change fonts in PDF files. You should look at the crop command if you wish to zoom in on the file in a way that stays consistent when you turn pages
  3. You can only bookmark files, not pages. It does not matter which type of file it is (epub, pdf, notebook)

Device: More than I need, but not as many as I would like.
I really hope that they can get the reading experience working better on their device. What they have been able to do so far with their limited specs is truly impressive.

If they can get some decent reading software onto their device allowing for such things as the installation of stardict dictionaries, it will become a device well worth considering even with its current hardware limitations.

A second generation model with better hardware specs could be a real force to be reckoned with. There is some real potential there. I sincerely hope that they succeed and are able to persuade me to further lighten my already wanting wallet.

Well, it came a day early

I probably will mainly be using it as an eBook ready for a couple of weeks, so that is pretty much all I've played with so far (other than to make sure I can draw/write on it).

The thing really is light, no problem holding it one hand. Feels lighter than my Kindle Voyage but the size may be confusing me on it.

The eReader software does need a lot of work. It is useable but some big gaps (as others have mentioned):

It looks like no way to jump to a specific page/location, other than changing to a thumbnail view and scrolling forever until you find the page you want.

And as others have said, no bookmarks within a document and no search.

It can recognize gestures -- you swipe down to scroll thru files (or pages in thumbnail view) but it looks like you can do page turns only with the buttons. Means you have to hold it in your left hand to keep the right hand free to hit the button.

I've come across a couple of ePubs that just show black pages (Chapter headings show and the occasional random word). These are books I bought from Story Bundle or Humble Bundle. I can open them fine in the Calibre reader and in iBooks.

I am going to have to find one of my old book lights if I am going to read on this on a darkened plane.

These issues are all software so hopefully that can be fixed in future releases.

@TheMadBrewer, in thumbnail view there should be a "Go to page" button. If you click it, you can enter the number of your page and jump directly to it. No as ideal as bookmarks/chapters, as it's hard to know the exact page you want, but should save *some* scrolling.

Thanks -- I had missed that. I've also noticed my battery seems to be drain fairly quickly. Turned off WiFi but seem to lose 10% and hour whether reading or not.

Hello! Apologies for wedging in. Just wanted to ask for your opinion if it perhaps is time for a new ReMarkable category in order to make the discussion more structured and create one central point for this device as is the case with others?

Yes, I think this would be a great idea.

Yeah, it does drain way too fast. Somehow it drains battery even when you're not changing the screen. Hopefully software can fix this since showing an eink image shouldn't drain resources. At least it charges quickly.
