Did anyone ever get an Onyx slaved to Windows with acceptable lag for editing text? I tried it before with VNC but found it was just a tad too slow. I might give it another go as I have a lot of editing to do and my eyes are starting to get sore. I might have to try with vim and a blue-tooth keyboard, but I'd rather just slave to my laptop as the keyboard and editing shortcuts are superior/more familiar.

Did you know about "Chrome Remote Desktop"?
Featuring "the Chromoting protocol developed by Google". Well, I did not. Works on: Chrome OS, Linux (beta), OS X, iOS, Windows, Android. Test in queue. |

Apparently it runs on Android 4.0, so it's feasible. But it it any less laggy than VNC? Let us know how it goes please.

I tried RDP. Had not tried before because I am not interested in Windows only technologies.
But, I would have bet it works very well, and it does. The test was difficult because, well, I do not have a Windows machine; I set up a virtual one but a number of malfunctions made it a not in-deep test. First, I tried with the standard com.microsoft.rdc.android client (badly named "RD Client"), version 8.1.28.2: it would continuously complain that it had no network, in spite of contrary evidence. Uninstalled. Then I tried Iordan's "aRDP", or com.iiordanov.freeaRDP, version v3.8.8: of course it worked well, surprisingly well. But, I forgot one detail. RDP does not replicate your original desktop - it creates a new session. I planned to use my original desktop mouse and keyboard, but they are not attached to new RDP sessions. I did not proceed from there. In any case, the technology seemed to works well - and, as expected, performing better than VNC; potentially quite usable even on the "slow" standard Onyx boards. Along the lines of "This software (com.google.chromeremotedesktop, or "Chrome Remote Desktop", version 61.0.3163.20) will not run without the google services, which are not installed etc." But I saw no reason to install that extra, so I just stopped there. I still believe the best bet is a "powerful processor" version of the MaxCarta (for both the graphics acceleration required by some clients and for the need to improve responsiveness and to avoid constantly clogging the CPU with huge processing queues), which is welcome anyway and for all applications, and/or the HDMI input. I see that most software runs on Android 4.0.4 - I have not yet met an application that I needed and does not (but I do not hunt for and install loads of them; I have seen others report differently).
Oftentimes, I see in apk download websites that the latest version, say 1.23, supports from Android 99; go down a few versions and it's very easy that you'll find the latest version, say 1.0.34, that supported from Android 4.0.4 . That is the reason why I mentioned even in the latest posts «com.microsoft.rdc.android client or "RD Client", version 8.1.28.2; com.iiordanov.freeaRDP or "aRDP", version 3.8.8; com.google.chromeremotedesktop or "Chrome Remote Desktop", version 61.0.3163.20» - the versions are picked for compatibility. Eureka.
I found a way to test some behaviour as monitor on the MaxCarta not just for my system - for any operating system, actually. The thing is, I was puzzled because the delay I experience with my configuration of the combo x11vnc+bVNC appears to be too much, so I was also testing other VNC set-ups: I remembered that virtual machine systems include VNC connections for management. So, I tested the VNC server embedded in VMware, still using bVNC as a client; I tested Win7 and some live Ubuntu. It does work well, probably better then x11vnc+bVNC. I am not sure what you will do with this information - it is interesting because it allows to do some more comparisons between remote desktop systems, and in the end to try to understand what is the best that one can expect from the MaxCarta (and his smaller but equipotent brothers) used as a monitor. Nonetheless, if windows users out there have not yet tried their "Remote Desktop (RDP)" server with the aRDP client, I encourage you to do so. Last edited by mdp; 10-01-2017 at 11:30 AM. |

And if you make the server static IP you'd be able to use it that way on the road?

If you want to put "the Internet" in between, yes that's what remote desktop is born for (more or less). Of course, each technology is more or less fitting: for VNC you want to use a more direct connection; RDP is very good in small networks; but for using your "monitor" in Tokyo while your server is in Stockholm you would want to use NX or TV (TeamViewer should be famous for that)... MenuetOS on a MaxCarta, acted through the VNC embedded in VMWare. Yes, it (the "monitor") works well. (I have a passion for esoteric OSs, but I see I have only few in house, too bad.) Last edited by mdp; 10-01-2017 at 04:41 PM. |

Hi, mdp. I tried UsbNetworking - very well, but after 30-40 minutes the device freezes. Through Wi-Fi works normally. Any ideas? Max 1.8.2 Android 4.0.4, PC - Xubuntu 16.04.

have you tried limiting your bandwidth with `wondershaper`? By the way - I think that freezes may also depend on the server. I experience them with `x11vnc`, but I tried today `vino` (upon suggestion from Iordan himself) and the VNC embedded in VMWare, and I could throttle the the connection speed. Note that these latter tests are not time extensive. What configuration are you using (which server, which client, which tweaks etc.)? Last edited by mdp; 10-01-2017 at 04:52 PM. |
