I'd like to see a debug log from iamallmight before speculating more.
Hi JimmXinu. In an attempt to split an omnibus epub, I found your plugin (thank you very much) for Calibre. However, I ran into exactly the same situation as the user iamallmight, who mentioned that they couldn't get the plugin icon to appear in the menu bar. The same is (was) true for me, but I managed to get it working by installing version EpubSplit-2.8.0.zip from the github releases page. So, this is just to confirm that iamallmight is quite right. There is no way for me to troubleshoot the issue any further than to only inform you that there must be something wrong with the latest release 2.9.0 zip archive, or something.

So, what happens when you install 2.9.0 is, you get the calibre dialogue "Success: Plugin EpubSplit successfully installed under User interface action plugins.", but the following dialogue that provides options to add a link to the menus, doesn't appear. As I said, version 2.8.0 installs correctly.

Odd. I don't use the plugin but decided to install it. During the install, it asked where and I stayed with the default Main Toolbar and Main Toolbar with Device Connected. Since the main toolbar was full, I had to click on the widget at the right end of the toolbar to see the icon for EpubSplit. See attached image.

With Calibre 4.15, I added the EpubSplit icon to the main toolbar. I restarted Calibre and the icon is still there.

@blewbubbles did you go to Preferences > Toolbars & menus > The main toolbar and add the icon to the toolbar? I did because I didn't have one there because I use it from the right click menu.

What version of calibre are you installing EpubSplit on? It showed on the toolbar for 4.15 and could be added to the right click context menu. As for the toolbar menu, AFAIK, that would only appear the first time you install EpubSplit.

On the contrary, there's a lot more you could tell me:

What version of Calibre are you using?

What OS are you using?

Are you using a Calibre install from download.calibre-ebook.com? Which one? (Windows has 32bit, 64bit and Portable versions)

Have you tried installing the plugin while running Calibre in debug mode as I suggested to iamallmight? Posting the resulting debug log might tell us a lot.

I just tried installing the plugin in a clean Calibre 4.15 Portable (win10) install and it worked exactly as expected.

Ah! I'm using Linux, not windows. I clean installed Calibre 3.21 (from apt repository) and tried to installed the epub split plugin (2.9.0). The result was the same as in any previous attempt, where I wouldn't get the dialogue to choose where to put the plugin link, with the result that the icon didn't appear anywhere. On my system and Calibre version, the 2.9.0 plugin doesn't install properly, but the 2.8.0 release does. So, no sweat, I've got it working for now and that is great!

System: Linux Mint 19.2 (ubuntu bionic)
Calibre: 3.21.0
Python 2.7.17 (default)

Thanks for all the recommendations, much appreciated.

OK.. JimmXinu thanks, I took a tip from your last post, and downloaded Calibre 4.15 from download.calibre-ebook. com. I ran it from the uncompressed folder with a clean setup, and in this case EpubSplit 2.9.0 installs correctly. Thanks a lot! And BTW it works great!

Yeah, that version is over 2 years old and probably doesn't have the py2/py3 compatibility changes that are needed.

In the next release, I will increase the minimum Calibre version to v3.48 (the last v3)--that one worked when I tested it.

Never ever install Calibre from some useless repository. There are a lot of things that can be wrong with it. Always download Calibre from the official Calibre website.

Glad to be of help. Baffeling that I've been using the install from repo, which is clearly very old. And actually, Calibre is one of the easiest apps to to "install" from a pre-built archive. It's not always so easy for me to build from source due to limitations of my setup. I've got Sigil built from source though. So, I will give it a shot with Calibre and see how it goes. Thanks guys.

No. And if you try, it will complain.

But you can change a v3 epub to v2 using Calibre's Convert (output epub, set output version=2) and then use it.

Decided to try this plugin today, and was pleased with the result. Even a user like me, who tends to fly by the seat of my pants when it comes to this type of thing, was able to split a couple of book bundles I have into individual books.

Happy dance!
