You can put over a year's worth of reading using just internal memory, and no problems at all. The complete "library" of ebooks that you will never read can stay safely on your hard drive, and even be backed up on flash media. But why insist on putting tons of stuff on the Reader that you'll never access? This "completist" mentality baffles me. I use my Reader to read books, not to "carry around my whole library."

And, if I want to listen to music, I'll use a more compact and better-sounding mp3 player, thankyouverymuch.
I have a 2GB card on my readers, and I find that's plenty. And I have all my books with me. Why? Because I might feel the need to read that specific book and not the one I was already reading. Or I want to look something up from a certain book I read before.

OK, but I have about 150 books (internal memory) and still have about half my memory free. That covers everything I might want to read in the next 6-8 months, plus room to add newly-borrowed books *and* most of what I've read in the past severla months in case I want to "go back" (which I rarely do, if ever). Still no memory card, and no system gacking here. Works for me!

I guess if the memory card hassle gets to be too much, the people using them might actually revert to just putting the books they might actually read on their Reader. (What a concept! )

thats what I do too, but I have 2x2GB card, one for books to read, and one for books I've read. And I have the spare SD card in the cover of my BeBook.

So if I need to check something I can easily swap the cards. Only hassle with that is moving the books from card too card, but hey, thats why there is a built in SD-card-reader in my laptop... right?

Considering you can fit a crapload of books on a 2GB card, why would you need a bigger one?

I don't hassle with my memory card. It's just in the reader as extra "hard disk". I don't know what you mean by memory card hassle...

The current crop of devices generally seem to be getting 1GB or more of storage space. That's enough for many, many hundreds of books without needing to bother with memory cards.

I have a one gig SD card for my reader, and not even begun to use it. With the size of ebooks, it'll be hard to navigate the book selection before you get to fill it.

Not if the device supports folders.

I keep all of my books in a folder on a portable drive. I have a copy of them all on my laptop. Once I complete the conversions, my 10gb folder will shrink considerably, very possible down to 4gb or even less.

However, these also include CBZ/CBR files, which are basically zipped images. These take up quite a bit of space. I'm toying with the thought of going thru them all and cutting the images in half, so that I can read them easier in landscape mode on the 5". Not sure how it'll work. I'll try it with a few pages of one comic first. If it works well, I'll complete the conversion. If not, then I'll simply not copy these to the SD card.

Even still, with folders there gets to be a limit to how much you can have before it gets difficult.

You all are correct. I just wanted an excuse to get a 16 GB card.

Mainly, I have no device to test them on. And I'd hate to convert all to, say, ePub, only to find out that I prefer Lit, or such.

You won't prefer LIT. It has slow rendering on the Hanlin devices currently. If you don't mind the fact that bookmarks won't work you can simply zip up your images in a file and read them directly with the Hanlin device. This provides the advantage in that you can adjust the contrast and image brightness to improve the reading experience.

The point is NOT loading entire libraries

Harry is likely, as usual, right that 1GB of strorage space may be enough. However, the benefit of an SD card slot is other than carrying around your entire library. With SD card slots you can swap music and non-DRM eBooks very quickly and easily. You can read someone's presentation or paper or thesis easily.

Another point is that I am noticing that some ADE ebooks, because of the graphics, and illustrations, eat up a hell of a lot more memory than some of us are used to. As we go up from 4 level to 8 level to 16 level Grey Scale... each title uses more and more memory.

I am not arguing with Harry that, for the time being, 1GB may be enough. I am just saying that the SD card slot is still a hell of a feature to have on an eBook Reader and may prove more valuable as formats and eBooks change. Astak is sticking with devices that offer the SD card slot!
