In The Child Who, Simon Lelic has created a dark and unflinching picture of the causes and consequences of a terrible and controversial event: the murder of a child by another child. At once both disorientating and fresh, this is a hugely gripping novel of exploitation, vengence and fear.

The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure by William Goldman from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt ($1.99) is the Kindle Deal of the Day (July 22) *Wait for price to reflect discount before 1-clicking

Quote:
Product Description

This fantasy classic is an exceptional story about quests for riches, revenge, power, and true love. People may find it impossible--inconceivable, even--to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than its movie adaptation, but the film retains only a part of the book's ingenious storytelling.

Aleph by Paulo Coelho from Vintage is $0.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Book Description

Transform your life. Rewrite your destiny.

In his most personal novel to date, internationally best-selling author Paulo Coelho returns with a remarkable journey of self-discovery. Like the main character in his much-beloved The Alchemist, Paulo is facing a grave crisis of faith. As he seeks a path of spiritual renewal and growth, he decides to begin again: to travel, to experiment, to reconnect with people and the landscapes around him.

Setting off to Africa, and then to Europe and Asia via the Trans-Siberian Railway, he initiates a journey to revitalize his energy and passion. Even so, he never expects to meet Hilal. A gifted young violinist, she is the woman Paulo loved five hundred years before—and the woman he betrayed in an act of cowardice so far-reaching that it prevents him from finding real happiness in this life. Together they will initiate a mystical voyage through time and space, traveling a path that teaches love, forgiveness, and the courage to overcome life’s inevitable challenges. Beautiful and inspiring, Aleph invites us to consider the meaning of our own personal journeys: Are we where we want to be, doing what we want to do?

Some books are read. Aleph is lived.

The Brontes Went to Woolworths: A Novel by Rachel Ferguson from Bloomsbury USA is $2.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Book Description

’How I loathe that kind of novel which is about a lot of sisters’; so proclaims Deirdre at the beginning of The Brontës Went to Woolworths, one of three sisters.

London, 1931. As growing up looms large in the lives of the Carne sisters, Deirdre, Katrine and young Sheil still share an insatiable appetite for the fantastic. Eldest sister Deirdre is a journalist, Katrine a fledgling actress and young Sheil is still with her governess; together they live a life unchecked by their mother in their bohemian town house. Irrepressibly imaginative, the sisters cannot resist making up stories as they have done since childhood; from their talking nursery toys, Ironface the Doll and Dion Saffyn the pierrot, to their fulsomely-imagined friendship with real high-court Judge Toddington who, since Mrs Carne did jury duty, they affectionately called Toddy.

However, when Deirdre meets Toddy’s real-life wife at a charity bazaar, the sisters are forced to confront the subject of their imaginings. Will the sisters cast off the fantasies of childhood forever? Will Toddy and his wife, Lady Mildred, accept these charmingly eccentric girls? And when fancy and reality collide, who can tell whether Ironface can really talk, whether Judge Toddington truly wears lavender silk pyjamas or whether the Brontës did indeed go to Woolworths?

The Brontës Went to Woolworths is part of The Bloomsbury Group, a new library of books from the early twentieth-century chosen by readers for readers.

The Replacement Wife by Eileen Goudge from Open Road is $2.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Book Description

From New York Times bestselling author Eileen Goudge comes a poignant new novel that asks the question, “What would you do if you were told you had only six months to live?” For one professional matchmaker the answer is heart-wrenching: She must find her husband’s next wife.

Camille Hart, one of Manhattan’s most sought-after matchmakers, has survived more than her fair share of hardships. Her mother died when she was a young girl, leaving her and her sister with an absentee father. Now in her forties, she has already survived cancer once, though the battle revealed just how ill-equipped her husband Edward is to be a single parent. So when doctors tell Camille that her cancer is back—and this time it’s terminal—she decides to put her matchmaking expertise to the test for one final job. Seeking stability for her children and happiness for her husband, Camille sets out to find the perfect woman to replace her when she’s gone.

But what happens when a dying wish becomes a case of “be careful what you wish for”? For Edward and Camille, the stunning conclusion arrives with one last twist of fate that no one saw coming.

At once deeply felt and witty, The Replacement Wife is an unforgettable story of love and family, and a refreshing look at the unexpected paths that lead us to our own happy endings.

How To Cook A Tart by Nina Killham from Bloomsbury USA is $2.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Product Description:

Cookbook author Jasmine March’s life is like a perfectly prepared béchamel-rich, satisfying, and drenched in butter. But even a great béchamel curdles sometimes. Her husband, Daniel, has taken up with one of his Zone-dieting drama students; Careme, her daughter, is bent on starving herself to death; and Jasmine’s fellow foodies have had just about enough of her astronomically caloric recipes. To make matters worse, her publisher is threatening to cancel her contract. And then there’s the small matter of the dead body she finds one morning on her kitchen floor.

Filled with mouth-watering descriptions of Jasmine’s creations-venison stew with Madeira and juniper berries, crispy chicken breasts stuffed with goat cheese and mint-Nina Killham’s smart and spirited first novel is good enough to eat.
How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read by Pierre Bayard from Bloomsbury USA is $2.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Product Description:

In this delightfully witty, provocative book, literature professor and psychoanalyst Pierre Bayard argues that not having read a book need not be an impediment to having an interesting conversation about it. (In fact, he says, in certain situations reading the book is the worst thing you could do.) Using examples from such writers as Graham Greene, Oscar Wilde, Montaigne, and Umberto Eco, he describes the varieties of “non-reading”-from books that you’ve never heard of to books that you’ve read and forgotten-and offers advice on how to turn a sticky social situation into an occasion for creative brilliance.

Practical, funny, and thought-provoking, How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read-which became a favorite of readers everywhere in the hardcover edition-is in the end a love letter to books, offering a whole new perspective on how we read and absorb them.

Talking to Strange Men by Ruth Rendell from Open Road is $1.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Product Description:

A man yearns to win back his wife’s love and wreak vengeance on her lover with the help of a secret ring of spies

Dead drops, coded messages, and a safe house—it’s all make-believe for a teenage spy ring. But when John Creevey intercepts the messages and believes them to be the work of a real crime syndicate, the spy games turn deadly serious in a fiery cocktail of obsession and revenge.

Ruth Rendell expertly layers her narrative to reveal the grotesque truths behind her characters’ ordinary lives.
My Dirty Little Book of Stolen Time: A Novel by Liz Jensen from Bloomsbury USA is $2.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Product Description:

Charlotte Schleswig, the delightful narrator of Liz Jensen’s latest novel, supports herself and the lumpen Fru Schleswig (who may or may not be her mother) as a prostitute in 1890s Copenhagen. While she is no small success at the trade, she leaps at a new job opportunity for herself and Fru Schleswig, as cleaning ladies for the wealthy widow Krak. But mysteries abound at Fru Krak’s dark old mansion. The basement appears to be haunted, townspeople claim to have seen the dead Professor Krak walking the streets as a ghost, and there are stories of desperate souls who paid the professor a visit and never emerged. In fact, as Charlotte will discover, there is a simple explanation for all this: the basement is home to a time machine. When their cunning investigations land them in trouble, Charlotte and Fru Schleswig find themselves catapulted through time and space to modern-day London, and there their adventures truly begin.

With the minxy, intrepid Charlotte, Liz Jensen introduces a heroine every bit as memorable as Louis Drax. And with My Dirty Little Book of Stolen Time, she delivers yet another outlandishly entertaining novel, in which the seemingly insurmountable obstacle of spacetime proves no match for human ingenuity and earthly passion.

In "The Actress," a great star's shady past becomes the plaything of a blackmailer. . . . In "The Harlequin Tea Set," Mr. Harley Quin helps a man save his loved ones from the greedy hand of murder. These and six other stories of danger and detection complete this truly stellar collection.

I can highly recommend both
Trap Line by Carl Hiaasen and Montalbano Bill
and
You Get What You Pay For by Larry Beinhart

Trap Line was the first Carl Hiaasen I read, and I haven't missed one since.
(and I'm pretty sure I've read all of Montalbano's much more limited range as well, and enjoyed those.) They make me do ATDrake's baby seal dance...

The Larry Beinhart is excellent as well.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, Arcadata!

The Uninnocent: Stories by Bradford Morrow from Pegasus Books is $2.31 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Book Description

“The Unninocent is a masterpiece of empathy and of storytelling. Even if this is the first time reading Morrow, you’ll feel like you’ve been waiting your whole lifetime for this dark bouquet to appear. I love this chapel of unholy stories with their charming, monstrous, wholly sympathetic characters.”—Karen Russell, author of Swamplandia!

Bradford Morrow’s stories have garnered him awards such as the O. Henry and Pushcart prizes and have given him a devoted following. Now gathered here for the first time is a collection of his finest, gothic tales.

A young man whose childhood hobby of collecting sea shells and birds’ nests takes a sinister turn when he becomes obsessed with acquiring his brother’s girlfriend, in “The Hoarder” (selected as one of the Best American Noir Stories of the Century). An archeologist summoned to attend his beloved sister’s funeral is astonished to discover it is not she who has died, but someone much closer to him, in “Gardener of Heart.” A blind motivational speaker has a crisis of faith when he suddenly regains his sight, only to discover life was better lived in the dark, in “Amazing Grace.”

In all of these stories, the reader will be delighted to find himself enthralled and captivated by one of the most potent voices in contemporary American fiction.
