Dyna was dumb as a brick. But she was beautiful. And she knew it. Her doggie philosophy was, "I'm blonde and beautiful. I don't need to know how to fetch. Just bring it to me while I pose over here by the pretty bush."

Because you were no longer an intruder into "her" territory.

Both my dogs ADORE peanut butter. It makes pilling them ever so easy. Just stick the pill into a wad of peanut butter and down they go!!

Most of my cats have liked spicy food, as well. (Though watching one try it for the first time is hilarious. ("Whoa! What was that????... I'd better try that again.")

And the outdoor cats I had used to nibble and sleep on the garlic plants.

As I make changes to my lifestyle to be more healthy, sustainable, efficient, etc, I still have "vegetarian diet" to attempt.

Beyond a food animal's diet, there is the fact that the amount of grain used to feed food-providing animals is orders of magnitude higher than the amount of grain that could directly sustain a human diet. And as we use up more agricultural land, increase our population, convert vegetable products to oil-replacement products like ethanol, etc, we will need to be much more efficient in our use of edible grains.

Farmers are already choking over the high cost of feedgrain, thanks to so much of it being redirected into our gas tanks. Eventually, quite a few of those animal farmers will be forced to give them up, and others will raise the price of meat to compensate for high grain prices, so high that few of us will be able to afford meat.

So it's in our, especially my, best interests to try to go vegetarian. Unfortunately, I am so thoroughly pre-conditioned to a meat-filled diet, that I haven't been able to take the plunge yet. I can't even imagine enjoying the process of eating, without meat. (Sad, huh?)

My current cats don't go out, but I have a cockatiel. Jinian, the older female, thinks the bird is beneath her notice (even when he's flying overhead), but Hermes, the only slightly younger male (he's about 15) wants to play with Lillis in the worst way. But he knows he's not supposed to. I shouldn't laugh, but there's little funnier to watch than a cat struggling with its conscience. He looks at the bird, he looks at me, he cries a bit, he looks at the bird....

Lillis the cockatiel, meanwhile, is completely oblivious. He only notices Hermes if Hermes is getting attention and he's not.

Many years ago, however, a stray we'd adopted brought in a bluejay. And it was only stunned. We came home to find it on the shower curtain rod in the bathroom, NOT HAPPY. Took two of us with leather gloves and a bucket to get it out.

Really? I didn't know that. All I knew about garlic plants and animals is that the fire ants won't build anywhere near my big garlic patch in the back yard.

Not off topic - he got better after the acutelation, so we are using the thread for other things now.

We're still talking about technical difficulties. Now we're talking about the technical difficulties of keeping cats and being vegetarians.

Steve, less meat is still better (for you and for the environment) than the amount of meat most Americans eat. No need to cut it all at once.

There are no technical difficulties of being vegetarian, only how vegetarians can get "away" with eating eggs...
