That's so funny, because my mom used to have to feed the chickens when she was young. She wouldn't eat chicken, because she said they would throw the waste parts back into the chicken pen for feed, and it was too much like cannibalism for her!

My husband raised chickens. I've heard more than anyone should probably know about what they'll eat, given a chance. (Though the stories about the rooster coming up to the house and pounding on the door, demanding Cheerios from my husband's younger sister so he could show off to his harem, were the best. )

The problem is, the meat industry apparently thinks it's ok to feed animal parts to all sorts of animals that wouldn't eat meat on their own, the most egregious examples being cows and sheep. Unlike human beings (and pigs), who are biologically omnivores, cows and sheep aren't meant to be eating anything but vegetation, let alone one another. If I hadn't become a vegetarian already, learning about CJD would have done it.

I'd recommend that you folks who are still eating meat check your sources, and go for organic, and range-fed if at all possible. Quite apart from the ethics of world hunger (which is a big part of my own vegetarianism), the health issues associated with eating meat are pretty scary.

Though I have to admit that the way vegetables get handled these days, they're sometimes not much better. I would like to point out, however, that salmonella and e coli don't naturally grow on vegetables-- that's cross-contamination from the meat industry again.

Fear us crab eaters also - snapping those legs apart makes crab juice and shell shrapnel fly everywhere! It's like getting poked in the eye by yumminess!

i'd rather not even be in the same room as people eating crabs. or any crustaceans or shellfish at all. even regular fish in fact, but that's more because of the ungodly stench.

That's one thing I will not eat. No veal, no lamb. Never ever. I just can't make myself do that. I don't mind that other people don't have a problem with it .... I just can't do it.

Hmmm, sorry if I was bragging or being obnoxious or rubbing anything in. I don't eat meat generally, and don't buy it at the grocery store and fix it here at home. But that has just as much to do with my being too lazy to make real meals for myself as anything else.

If I am invited to someone's house, or to a party (like the ones we have here on Tuesday), I eat what's being served (except for those things to which I am allergic ... and I absolutely refuse to eat veal or lamb). However, while the Christians at the table are saying their grace, I am silently saying a short prayer for the dead over whoever is lying on my plate.

That's why I said "I try" to be a vegetarian. It's not an easy thing to do. The last time I made a really concerted effort to do it, I ended up in the hospital with an illness related to protein deficency. I also "try" to do a lot of things that are wonderful things to do ... but I also tend to fail miserably. And then I feel rather guilty about not having been a success at it.

I often marvel at those of my friends who are strict vegans (no milk, no eggs, no cheese ... no ICE CREAM!!). I could not do that ... but I admire them for working so hard at it.

Again, sorry if the post came off as obnoxious, or anything else other than what it was meant to be.

And, I suppose if friends can't allow each other to be grumpy from time to time, then they aren't much use as friends.

The cats and dogs don't even make a pretense of vegetarianism. They could give a rat's ass about any belief system I follow. Unless, of course, it keeps them from getting a regular meal, in which case I'm quite sure they will kill me.

I understand that dogs could handle vegetarianism, but it's very difficult to keep cats healthy on a vegetarian diet. I've never even tried. They're carnivores. I accept that along with their hairballs and neurotic habits.

Oddly, cats and dogs are both omnivores. My sister's cat (Poppy) was addicted to cabbage. All you had to do was say the word, and this cat would run to the fridge and wait patiently while you broke her off a few chunks.

My friend Jack's cat is wild about tortilla chips. Also loves them with beans and cheese.

One of my cats has a thing about lasagna (shades of Garfield, I know). My cat from when I was a kid, was a heavy drinker. I mean, martinis, scotch and water .... if anyone at one of my mom's parties left their drink unattended for so much as a second ... Nuggets had downed a good part of it. He used to get the most painful looking hangovers the next day.

Didn't mean that cats won't eat anything but meat-- only that they have a hard time being healthy without it, whereas dogs (at least I've been told) can exist on a non-meat diet with no ill effects, because they can manufacture proteins from amino acids (the same way humans do). It's been a while since I looked into the details, though.

My cats like non-meat products as well. One cat used to regularly swipe baked goods if they were left even slightly unattended. He had a particular fondness for muffins. The kitty with the nasty sense of humor that I mentioned in another thread also likes some baked goods, particularly eclairs (I don't give her the chocolate part, of course). A friend had a cat who was extremely fond of popcorn. They used to share a bag while watching TV together.

Ah, got it, now I understand what you mean. Yes, as I understand it, there are certain amino acides that cats absolutely must have to maintain health (taurine being the one that comes to mind).

Oh yes ... popcorn. Several of my cats (including Miss Buzz Saw of 2002, Morgan) beg for that whenever I make it.

Dyna, the chow-chow dog that came with the husband, didn't like me. She did, however, love my spaghetti more than anything else in the world. The only times I fed her was when there was leftover spaghetti, because any other time she would threaten to chew me into tiny little pieces for stealing her master.

I need to edit this, because actually, after we bought our house, somehow Dyna saw it as a new beginning. She stopped hating me, and even liked to hang out on the patio with me and get petted after that.

I have a dog who loves butter and peanut butter. I've had butter disappear off the counter just in the time that my back has been turned. As for peanut butter, we've learned not to keep it in the pantry, refrigerator, or anywhere except the highest shelf in the kitchen.

SHe's a pretty smart dog, too. She figured out, after having gotten her head stuck in the jar, that she need to chew the bottom off the jar in order to get all the peanut butter out.
