For now, I'll just keep using ADE2, because it has to receive old-style-DRM books, or it won't work. If Adobe and/or the sellers want to force the adoption of the new DRM, they'll have to prevent the use of ADE2, or they will need to support the old DRM forever. I can see Adobe having to make a new server to serve both the old and new DRM based on what's used to download the ePub. U expect the outcry will be massive when people download ADE 3 and find that the ePub won't work on their Reader or app because they used ADE 3 to download and they just lost the money they paid since they can no longer read as they want.
This is so going to backfire on Adobe. Think of all the legacy devices that exist now that most likely won't ever be updated. They work fine and there's no reason to abandon them just because Adobe wants to change the DRM. I can't see the publishers wanting to piss off their customers. |

More like not anymore. It was out in the wild, but only for a day or two. At least, some free books I downloaded for testing with ADE3, when it was fresh out, would only open in ADE3 but not in ADE2.
I had posted about it in this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...&postcount=173 Outcry and backpedaling of Adobe came after that - and we have to thank Adobe for botching it. If they had gone about it differently we would be stuck with new DRM already. |

Guys
I am a little confused, the ADE version I am using shows as 3.0, alfs plugin for calibre has no problem removing the drm. I have had this version for a few weeks, is there another version 3.0 that is out in the states, with updated drm or what |

Up until now you have been fortunate that the books you have bought were only available with the old DRM. This is because the seller either runs the old Adobe Content Server 4 (ACS4), or runs the new one (ACS5) set up to deliver books using the old DRM only, regardless of device or application. As soon as the seller sets up an ACS5 server in such a way that it will deliver books using the new DRM to devices or applications that can handle it (such as ADE 3.0), then you will receive books in ADE 3.0 that Alf can not strip yet. The safest option is to keep using ADE 2.0. By using ADE 2.0, you force the seller to give you an old-style DRM-ed book, or you won't be able to download and read it. I, and others here, are assuming that it will be a very long time before Adobe and the sellers will drop support for ADE 2, or more accurately, for devices that only use the old DRM. Obsoleting people's e-readers without a good reason would cost them many customers. |

Your best bet is to force the server to send you books in the old DRM, by using ADE2.0 so you cannot receive books in the new DRM. EDIT: I got ninja-posted! ![]() Last edited by eschwartz; 06-22-2014 at 04:54 PM. |

In case you didn't listen to the previous two posters - download and install 2.0 instead now! If you happen to download a book that uses the new drm in the future, you will never be able to get it in the old drm again. The first download controls what drm you get.

I think I read that the passkey method (or whatever it's called) that B&N uses has been deprecated or removed from ADE 3.

For those using Bluefire Reader on iOS and/or Android, DO NOT USE IT TO DOWNLOAD ePub from the .ascm file. The iOS app has been updated with RMSDK 10 (no idwa when the Android version is going to be updated if it is not yet) and that's the version that can deliver the new DRM. Once downloaded, with Bluefire and you get the new DRM, you cannot download to the old DRM.

Kobo is still 4.0.3 AFAIK, so that leaves OmniLit, Google & eBooks.com, who else? Overdrive is 4.1.2 EDIT: eBooks.com is 4.1.1 OmniLit/AllRomance uses Overdrive, at least the book I just checked did so they're 4.1.2 Google, as mentioned earlier, seems to have the status check secured/disabled so can't be checked. Besides, it's now July and ACS 5 could be out in the wild any time this month from what was said before. |

Many of the ebook distributors have already switched to ACS5 months ago. They have a setting: "use new DRM" (not compatible with RMSDK9 devices) and "Use old DRM". Some school systems with closed ecosystems might use the "new" setting but no other commercial platform could. They'd be out of business immediately. It is not something to worry about. And using a RMSDK10 based reader does not change a thing. I understand the concern, and Adobe screwed up the messaging around this at the time of release. Adobe needs to be carefully observed moving forward for sure, and believe you me I'm doing that x10000, but that chapter is closed.
