No, really?
![]() I was just curious where seacity1 heard this from, considering that as AnemicOak pointed out Kobo is still ACS server 4.0.3, hence confusion, hence sources are always good if someone wants to claim something/anything, especially when the standard sources disagree. ![]() |

Also, I just purchased a book from Kobo, which downloaded perfectly fine using ADE 1.7.2...

Yesterday, when downloading the latest firmware update for the Kobo Mini, I thought that the timing was kind of weird. What better way to make an e-reader - that hasn't seen any real update in ages - ready for the new DRM system? Why now of all times?
![]() Not to troll or anything, it's just what I felt then. I'm glad I have it because the Mini behaves so much better now, so I'm not complaining in any way. |

Kobo have not released firmware that uses the new RMSDK. They probably will. When they do, it should fix some "popular" problems.
As to changing the server, Kobo has a problem with that. They have just taken over all these Sony customers. These people will have devices that have not been updated to support the new DRM. Taking the customers and then changing the servers so they can't use them, would be very rude. I'm pretty sure Kobo aren't planning to do that. I forgot to comment: From something that Kobo said on the beta list, it was always planned to update the Mini. But, I think the new devices just came first. The Glo kept being updated because it shared a lot much with Aura and Aura HD. The Touch wasn't updated for a while either. Last edited by davidfor; 06-19-2014 at 03:15 AM. |

I'm afraid I haven't read the whole thread but wanted to pop in my pennyworth: this will kill epub and give more and more power to Amazon and kindles, which don't use epub.
I can see the hoards logging on and purchasing their kindles right now (well, almost). This upcoming change to ADE was one reason among many I chose a paperwhite as my second ereader, to avoid the change in epub DRM, (have I just repeated myself there? Sorry, my thyroxine needs to be increased and I'm easily confused at the mo'. Seeing gp on monday.) Last edited by BookCat; 06-19-2014 at 02:04 PM. |

When you buy a DRM book from Kobo for example, you have the choice to download it with Kobo DRM or Adobe DRM. If you want to avoid Adobe DRM, you have that option. Amazon on the other hand don't give you a choice of DRM schemes, so when Amazon changes their DRM the only way to avoid it will be to stop buying from Amazon. |

With a Kindle, however, they will only be able to shop with Amazon or with shops that sell DRM-free epubs/etc (or epubs with the older DRM, I suppose, if there will be such a thing). Please excuse/correct me if I've misread any of the technicalities. Just a thought-bubble! |

![]() ...and by that time, it will have been cracked. As pdurrant said, anyone who wants to remove the DRM will just not buy CS5-DRMed books. That is the whole point of wanting to remove the DRM, after all. |

I'm not entirely certain, but from what I've been able to gather, CS5 can only be set to either deliver only the old DRM for newly authorised ebooks (to both RMSDK9 and the new RMSDK10) or to deliver only the new DRM for newly authorised ebooks (to RMSDK10 only).
It seems that this is an either/or switch, and it's not possible for CS5 to deliver new DRM to RMSDK10 and old DRM to RMSDK9 (for newly authorised ebooks). So my guess is that it's going to be a year or so before any reseller is bold enough to flip that switch, and stop selling to all the old RMSDK9 devices. |
