The best RPG ever was undoubtedly Planescape: Torment. Not necessarily the gameplay, but the writing and plot were superb. In the strategy genre, I'd probably list Civilization 1 (I played the Atari ST version) or Master of Magic, though in terms of depth some newer games (like Dominions 3 and 4, or even Crusader Kings) are more impressive. |

A friend and I took turns torturing each other with custom maps. ![]() Torment's storyline is legendary and it's sad they haven't remade it with current tech. Ditto for the early Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. Good stories in there. The ME1 Mako is less than ideal but with the right tactics it can be tamed. (Hit and run drive-by's and artillery sniping being two useful tricks.) The story is where the game shines, especially the whole final sequence. Practically a space opera simulator. The other two have their highpoints but both sacrifice story depth to shooter mechanics and conventions. Have little hope for ME4 as EA clearly wants to evolve the series into a TPS shooter ala Gears. Another business where publisher blind focus on their needs trumps consumer interests to both sides detriment. The whole studio-style publishing system works against creativity in movies, games, and books by giving beancounters and non-creative managers too much say. The entire operation loses sight of the end user and ends up making stupid decisions. Which is why Adobe giving publishers the power to force the switch to the new DRM is a ticking time bomb. Sooner rather than later one of the BPHs is going to push the button. |

There's DRM lessons to be gleaned from other industries.
In this case that ignoring consumer needs/interests can kill companies. |

Wow, Tradewars ... that brings back memories! Loved the old "door games", back when I was so fascinated by my computer talking to other computers through the phone line! It really blew my mind, and then broke my phone bill.

Could I suggest that reviews of video games could just as easily be done by private mail? Then the rest of us who are concerned about the new DRM would not have to wade through stuff which is of no interest to us whatever, and which has nothing to do with the new DRM. |

We weren't reviewing video games, we were talking about DRM-free games that we remember from our younger days that are now sold at GoG.com, a vendor that does not use DRM and yet has a large customer base. This was directly related to the DRM topic and the claims made that DRM is essential to prevent people from not spending money.
Natural conversation happens in social media such as forums. This includes complaints which contribute nothing to the topic, either, and cause strife and negative reactions needlessly. |
