Yeah, Baen seems to be the GOG.com for ebooks... If you like Fantasy/SF.

I think Robot Trading Company also sells without DRM.

Well that is too cool. Brings back memories of games I played that had completely faded from my brain.

Wehehe.

I've actually replaced ALL of my old games with GOG.com versions, because:

- The are fully updated
- They are modified to run on newer operating systems (where necessary)
- They come in a packaged installer, expansions and all

Beats inserting 6 CD's to install Baldur's Gate, then swap the CD's for copy protection, and having to hunt for patches (if not already in my archive), and find ways to make a game run on Windows 7 if it doesn't out of the box.

With their versions, it's: Double-click, Install, GO! (If you are not inclined to install third party mods.)

Happy gaming

Again too cool, off topic or not. Worth buying if one gets the urge to play a blast from the past. Lot easier than dragging out those musty boxes of CD's

The problem in that plan is the "want it NOW" tax; eager readers will pay more to read sooner, but that doesn't mean they'll buy a hardback if the paperback goes on sale at the same time.

They should learn patience. It saves boatloads of money. Simple as that.

Oh yes, patience is definitely rewarded when it comes to the book-buying dollar. However, traditional publishing has made a *lot* of money over the years on peoples' impatience.

Well that goes for a lot more than books. This months technology will often be much cheaper 3 months from now and often less than 1/2 price in less than a year. Same with fashion etc. Most basic things can be bought on sale for a lot less if one plans ahead.

Still I do buy things now on occasion even when I know waiting a couple of months will make a big difference. Go figure.

This is exactly the reason why I often build quite powerful computers for half the price some of my friends pay: because I'm always half a year late, and I always buy upper midrange / low toprange stuff instead of the stuff at the extreme top.

Yes, I'll be six months late.
Yes, my computer will be about 20-25% less powerful.
But, I'll save about 50, sometimes 60% of the money.

Three years later, the 20%-25% difference in power often doesn't matter. If my computer can't run the software or game, theirs can't run it either. But hey; I saved 50%+ of the money, so I just stick a new graphics card in there and the latest cpu that still fits the mainboard, and I can go for another three years. Surprise: after such an upgrade, my system often becomes faster than that of my friends, while I *STILL* didn't spend the amount of money they did.

The only problem: I have no bragging rights.

Sure you do. You've done it yourself and it may on occasion be even better and you can afford other neat stuff to brag about if you actually want to brag. Better not to brag about that money you save or someone will be trying to weasel it out of you

The whole premise of this board is that eBooks are better. And many people on this board think that hardbacks are the worst of the formats because of weight.

Your pricing ratios may be highly popular with many on this board, since the cheaper items are the ones they want. Others may think your pricing is fairer on the grounds of a relationship between cost of production and price being a matter of justice.* But publishers would be leaving a lot of money on the table that way.

And yet, it's a vital piece of the marketing puzzle. Be grateful for those who buy early, before the price drops; in effect, they're subsidizing your "wait for the drop" strategy. If everybody waited and nobody bought the more expensive early release, the later release would cost more.
