I read my Cybook in public all the time and I get a lot of questions. Some have heard of the concept of an ebook reader, some have seen them, many are curious anyway. I have my spiel down pat.

A conversation I had with a young man (college age, I guess) sitting next to me on the train last week:

Him: Is that a Kindle?

Me: It's an ebook reader, but not a Kindle. It has the same screen, it works pretty much the same way, but it doesn't have wireless download.

Him (nods knowingly): Oh, it's a cheap knockoff.

Me: NOT cheap. NOT a knockoff. Just a different device for the same function.

Him: *loses interest*

Sigh.

But as Bob said, flight attendants almost always ask about it. I think some of them are considering buying an ebook reader--they're so convenient for travel.

You might want to add, This one was on the market way before Amazon invented it.

I was speaking about web stuff at a conference and I mentioned ebooks. One of the attendees had a Kindle. I said something about how my Cybook was different and it was more the device "for me" and she said, very sympathetically, she was sorry that it hadn't been available when I purchased my reader. I told her, "It was available." She stared at me incomprehendingly.

The Kindle is a great device, I've actually talked other people into buying them because I knew it was perfect for their needs, but it's not for me, at least not at this time. I rule nothing out for the future.

Hi Robert,

Well, in this case I will buy one as soon as I am able to figure out how to get it to where I am at the moment it is released :-)

Btw, what are your shipping charges to the UK for something that weighs the same and consumes the same amount of space as the Pocket Pro package?

Best regards,

Robert

Dear Maggie Scratch:

Totally and completely agree. IF people hear of eBook Readers, they almost always hear of Kindle. Kindle, Kindle, Kindle!! That is why I tell them "like a Kindle... but true Open Format. I can buy eBooks from hundreds of websites".

I do not say "it is better than a Swindel". I try to make them understand that just as TWA (Trans World Airlines) was never the only airline... Kindle is one device, and there are others, that can offer you more. Astak happens to make a great device, just as reliable or more so, but allows the end user to suit themselves on where they buy eBooks. Maybe I should have called it the EZ Reader "FREEDOM".

One thing that casual onlookers can relate to is "having a choice". Talking "Open Format" invites the reply "what do you mean?"... and they start to open their eyes.

Thank you, Maggie!!

Update on Publicity.

Dear ALL:

My friend, the Media Manager for Consumer Electronics Association, is talking on TV all over the nation showing the EZ Reader. He will also try to get to Jimmy Fallon and O'Brien. He is redoubling his efforts.

Meanwhile, I have found a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers that will use the EZ Reader and carry it with him when camp opens. I hope I can get some interest by the TEAM. Maybe, just maybe, I can get them to carry a Maroon and Gold 49er Special. So... sports is certainly a venue.

Griffonwing reports that he is still trying to reach Paris Hilton. He wrote her a letter but she wants $100,000 to actually open it which she will spend on learning how to read.

That will happen with me shortly. I just purchased a new phone. I've been roaming now for 2 years (thankfully Sprint gave me free roaming when I moved out of their area). The phone will have an ereader in it as well. Although I'm not sure how much text it will be on screen, seeing as how it's a watch phone

I hate having a huge phone bulge in my pocket, or even accidentally leaving it at home on the charger, or even misplacing it. I lost it for over a week, it ended up being in one of my rarely worn blazers.

My phone on my wrist and a pocketpro in my jacket, and i'll be ready for anything.

Dear RobVarga:

Best guess is right around $39 to ship it to the U.K. when it is released. Remember, we do not set rates, the freight companies do. But this is a pretty accurate estimate!

We are still talking with the factory to make this entire thing happen.

Dear Griffonwing:

I cannot blame the mailman for the mistake. Paris and her dog both snarl and bite and are not house broken. You can only tell them apart as her dog is selective about mates.

New blog posted

Dear All:

I just posted a new blog (www.robertbEZ.blogspot.com).

The flash for the new website is finally up and running. I am trying to get it set up for a free walk-through on Tuesday (June 23). You will only be able to look; but I would welcome your comments before we open it up for business.

Will there be any password for entrance or will all be able to walk through by just going to the site?

You should mention the next time that the CyBook is actually older than the Kindle... So, it can't be a knockoff!

(at least, according to the wiki, the CyBook was introduced in october, and the kindle in november of 2007 )
