Do the following qualify in today's times?

Myth: Amazon is your best friend and loves you.

Truth: Amazon could care less about you except how much money and private information it can suck out of you.

Can you hear that whooosh of your life force being sucked out of you by Amazon?

Amazon was never *my* best friend. I've just been using them to get the best prices on the biggest catalog of ebooks and I'm not finished yet.

Not looking for a friend. Amazon has for years, though, been one of the better companies I've dealt with in terms of service (while pricing remains competitive).

Their actions within the past few days, however, are making me re-evaluate how much business I wish to do with them going forward.

Thanks, yes I did see your answer the first time.

So..... my no. 1-6 IS truth then!

But with reference to your answer.

I have yet to find a member here, (who is NON American with NO kindly aunty to send gift cards, no FAKE Amazon account, no fake US address, etc.) who has successfully gotten their Kindle from their imaginary friend (be it eBay or whoever) to actually work outside the US. Most can't even get their books loaded as I believe the Kindle first needs to be initialized remotely by whispernet? Not sure...

I mean WHO really wants to jump through so many hoops, tell so many lies, go through so many complications and feel like such a criminal! And all that just to own a Kindle!

I suppose theoretically it may be possible...

But in my original Truth or Myth post I did use the words LEGALLY, RESIDENT etc.

Peace!

Hmmm, I have DRM'd library mobi books which haven't been deDRM'd which reside happily on my Kindle for the duration of their check-out periods.

Of course, not sure how happy Amazon is about that...

Yup, sure does. Thankful I found Mobileread when I did and took advantage of all the tools and wikis when they were easily found.

Surely you mean couldn't care less, rather than could care less, don't you? To say that they "could care less" implies that they do, in fact, care about you.

There a parts of the U.S. that do not have Whispernet coverage, yet there are Kindle owners in those parts of the coverage. The Kindle does not need to be remotely initialized by Whispernet. We do have MR members living outside of the U.S. who own and use Kindles.

There seem to be quite a number of people who want to own Kindles. Some are willing to jump through hoops. Many ask when it will be available in their country. Some are upset that it isn't available in their country.

Daffy4U, I'm so sorry! I'm not sure why you are so angry with me and I certainly didn't mean to be mean to ANYONE!
I feel quite bad now as I was really enjoying this forum so much!
Why would you say such a thing? What did I say that was mean and to whom did I say it? Tell me and I will apologize.

P.S. Sorry I thought this was a site for ALL users of all devices from ALL countries in the world, so I was speaking from an international perspective. Sorry if I was mistaken.

Actually, could and couldn't are both correct and can convey the same meaning in the sentence, but you are correct that it might be clearer with couldn't.

I might have better written:

Quote:
Amazon cares less about you and your rights than about how much money and private information it can suck out of you.
or

Quote:
In true monopolistic fashion, Amazon has determined that on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being least and 10 most, your interests rate a 2 and Amazon's right to your money and private information rate a 10.
Sadly, Amazon could really do wonders for the publishing world. Although the Kindle doesn't fit my desires or needs, it clearly fits the desires and needs of a lot of people, and Amazon could be pressing publishers to be more open (no DRM) and less costly, all without trying to monopolize -- both horizontally and vertically.

In dragonbone's defense, I too have read people on the Amazon forums who are having trouble with Kindle overseas. Does the Kindle have to be registered via Whispernet, or does the website registration work?

I do agree with you. However, both phrases are in common use in the US and accepted to mean that same thing.
