Onyx Boox as monitor

If you are concerned about your router being hacked you might opt for a pocket wifi device. They were popular a few years ago and should be very cheap wherever used electronics are sold. You can also use your phone for tethering and usually there is a setting by which you can restrict WiFi access to only registered devices (your laptop and Onyx). If you really want to make sure you aren't hacked from far away, just remove the SIM card, obviously you have to give up the internet during that time span.

Eavesdroppers must find a WPA2 encrypted Wi-Fi encapsulating any non-encrypted exchange such as VNC, in a direct connection. If the connection passed through non-encrypted segments than you would care to encapsulate in an encrypted tunnel such as SSH end-to-end. You do not strictly need to scramble the document if it is transported in a guarded van.

I haven't tested but from what I've read it's not significantly better. The only advantage I see is that it operates without any battery (I believe)

I'm curious what you meant by that. I don't expect another, better E-paper device in the monitor department anytime soon. Do you ? I mean,we still don't even have an actual monitor but only screens with mirroring abilities.

Like Kumabjorn mentioned, and desk7 pointed out in the past, you have a former device software based (with compatibility issues, performance compromise etc.) and a newer device which apparently is a real monitor.

Is not the Carta2 expected?
If it has a HDMI input, problem solved.
If it does not, it will at least have a better CPU.
Of which it is expected:
- that it has at least even a minimal GPU, which enables to compile GL in the system, without which modern remote desktop techniques (NX, TeamViewer) do not even start, and
- that it has a bit more power (performance, cores) than the current, and since screen mirroring (remote desktop: VNC) consumes more than the current CPU capacity (say, roughly double), the current processor is a bottleneck.

Reports show that Dasung didnt implement the HDMI idea too well, you still need additional software and usb cables. Here are 2 reviews

Although according to the link mdp just posted, nate's second review tends to be a bit more generous than his first one but not good enough for the reasons I mentioned above. And then there's the price, 800-900$ for a device that can only act as a monitor only is ridiculous in my opinion. Even moreso when it's half assed. I do however wonder, if it can act as a stand-alone monitor and not just as a mirroring device.

I'm sorry, I was saying whether you expect a better device than the upcoming Max 2 in the near future. I really hope they implement the hdmi idea well unlike Dasung. Another requirement in my opinion should be that it has some type of monitor mode where it doesn't deplete the battery when used as such.

If you take a Max, and give it a capable processor like the Rockwell 3288 we are discussing in the other thread, and just make sure that the most standard software for Android works fine, and yes ok one day you can have an upgrade to a more recent Android, I do not know what more to dream for. (Edit: forgot the multitouch! That's also handy - not strictly necessary, but handy).

Coincidentally, I also have an Onyx Boox max Carta. I got it with the intention of trying it a monitor, but it's so damn slow that I don't think i will bother.

What are the chances we're getting the Rockwell or at least a multicore processor ? One of Onyx's representatives in a video said that it will be equipped with a capacative touch screen so that's neat.

No, Nate, believe me, it does work. It's just not optimal. It's a definite compromise. If another improved device is coming up soon, efforts on the current MaxCarta are preliminary research.

By the way, I am told that RDP works well. I planned to try it in a few days, on a virtual machine (my tests are from Linux desktop...). I do not know what is your system... If you are Win, why don't you try it yourself? Clients, you have at least one from Microsoft and the one from Iordanov.
