My 4GB is a Transcend 150x 4GB SD card. I originally bought the 4GB for my iMate PocketPC phone to carry eBook, business notes and some music. The internal 64k just wasn't enough for any of that data. My laptop reader wouldn't recognize the Transcend until I updated the driver but no problems with any of my other devices, including the PRS-505.

The 2GB is a generic standard speed that sells for $9 at a local computer store. It was given to me as a gift. I really didn't need it but apparently it was too cheap to resist? It sits in my drawer as a backup but I may give it to my spouse for the new digital camera.

I'm sure there are some compatability issues still out there. Probably based on brand, size and or speed. Some higher speed SD isn't liked by older devices, or non-cameras. It's the price of technology.

Well like the original thread creator I've been doing reading up on things for the sony reader. I expect mine to be here tomorrow or so since I just bought it.
From my research I've read that I can use 1 and 2 GB SD cards.. though what I found out is that some 4GB SD cards also work.. you can use the SDHC cards up to 32GB.. but who wants to spend over $100 on a memory card.. though if I could just have that one then at least I could have all my manga on there.. debating on how I'm going to sort the manga still.. each book as a pdf or each series as a pdf to save searching for things.

No here is where I get confused.. I notice it says you can use up to 8GB memory stick pro duo cards for the reader. What I want to know is if it has to be a sony memory stick pro duo or can you use the 8GB SD memory stick pro duo. They look exactly the same for me.. just every time I see the SD one it's usually being sold for a psp.

I have another $150 I get to spend on stuff for my reader once I get it so I'm just trying to find out what I can and can't use for the reader. Since I'm trying to get the most memory for what money I have. The internal memory of the reader will be the perfect size to fit all my normal books on it.. just I need the SD cards for my manga.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

i bought one 8 gb Micro SD-Card with an Adapter and the usb-stick to get it in the computer on e-bay for $17 and one 8 gb pro duo for $15.
I have not tried them out jet but when i loaded 600 books on a 1 gb SD-Card it took the 505 more than 5 minutes to get them in and i lost almost 15 % of batterie power for that task.
Maybe I will put audiobooks and some music on the 8 gigs and for books i will use a 512 mb or a 1 gig pro duo.
Just wondering, if anybody has testet the 505 with two full 8 gig cars - mixed with mp3 and ebooks. how long will it take to start the unit and how much "juice" it takes.
Take care
Harry

It would be interesting to know which is faster, indexing books on a Pro Duo, or SD card.
Also battery usage will be interesting to note.
Probably a pro duo card is faster than a SD card, but SDHC is faster than a Pro Duo.

Comparing a ProDuo to a SD mini or micro isn't really worth, since those cards (that need to go through an adaptor) generally have very slow speeds.

It would be interesting to know where the batterylife is longest; produo or SDHC.

For now I think I'm going to stick with the few 1GB SD cards I have laying around. I don't really have the extra money to spare for the pro duo or a bigger SD card right now. My main priority is to get a more sturdy case for the reader and to get the AC Adapter. I hate charging things on my computer.

I'm just trying to figure out getting manga on my reader. The comiclrf and the mangato something.. they make no sense to me at all. I'm a very very visual person and need a very very detailed description of how to use them and all.

For right now I found a simple way. I got this program that adds a virtual printer so I can save things as pdf. So I use power point to make a slide of each manga page and the save it for the reader. From there though.. I want to figure out how to make the images more clear.. mainly for the text and make the file size smaller.
In the end I really just want to make 1 pdf file for each manga series so I don't have to worry about things not being organized.
Though power point to pdf is still really good visually. I can read everything just if it could be a bit sharper it'd be freaking amazing.

For the most part though... I'm just really enjoying my reader. Though I hate how most of the ebooks I have, have grammatical and spelling errors which have no relation to the book but more a technical error in how the books was formatted or something. Still freaking awesome though for someone like me who can read 2 500+ page books in a day.

I'd suggest to get a Sony PSP charger, perhaps you can get them somewhere cheap from the grey market.

Most my 'Grey market' stuff works fine on the PSP.

I was thinking about that.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do.. I can deal with charging it on the computer and the case it comes with.. debating on using my Christmas money for a wii.. or get stuff for the reader. So many hard choices.. I'm not good with choices ><;

For now though.. the reader is absolutely perfect.

For what it's worth, seemingly a Gameboy Solar Panel can charge the Reader.
You can also charge it with a mini-USB to USB cable, and plug that in a car cigarette adapter (cigarette lighter to USB, 12V-5VDC).
Costs you less than 15$.

Works both fine.
Another thing is, the Reader by itself doesn't need a lot of recharges.
Once a week is good enough.

I read so much that it'll be once every few days. Whole point of why I got the reader was because of how much I read.
Give me about 3 days and I can read The whole Harry Potter series depending on how fast or slow I read. If I read faster it would take a little over 2.

I don't really have an issue with charging it on the computer. More that it's finding room on the desk to set the reader while it's charging.

I'm formatting books. To test them I need to upload them to the reader.
To upload them, I need to connect the reader to the Laptop.
So far I haven't charged the reader in a month!
I guess the few seconds it connects to the laptop is enough to keep it going...
It still shows battery full.

That's been the same for me. I've had my reader since Tuesday. I've read about 15 books so far on it. I've had it hooked on and off of my computer here and there for testing manga.
I didn't want to use comiclrf or that mangato whatever program. One you have to download and to me it makes no sense.. the other you have to download like 3 things.
So I just figured out my own way. Got a virtual printer thing that saves files to pdfs.. made a power point with each slide being a page of the manga. Then I used the virtual printer to save my manga as a pdf. Course I had to mess with the settings a bit to figure everything out. Which dpi had the best quality without giving my manga weird white lines.. then settings which kept the file smaller but in great quality.
In the end I had a 14.2 mb pdf for one volume of manga. It was readable on the reader to. Though the text was a bit hard in some places though still completely readable.

Once I had all that done I just used pdflrfwin to make the pdf into an lrf.. also so I could change the title and author.
In the end I had an 8mb lrf file. I put it on my reader and I was amazed. My pdf had been really good on the reader but once it was an lrf file it was amazing. The whole file ended up looking completely like it was straight from the book. Everything was clear and visible and the text was VERY visible.

Over all I was quite happy I figured out how to get the manga on my reader and make it look the best without having to use some programs that made no sense to me.
If I understood them I would probably use them instead since my way does take a bit of time..
Not like I don't have time though so it's not to bad.

I'm just amazed at all this reader can do.

Had some lady stop and talk to me at the allergist because she had wanted the reader but she's waiting for Target to get a new stock of them.

I just ordered the charger and leather case for my reader today. Target no longer sells cases except with the light.
Now I just need to go off and find the best memory card, that's cheap and has the most space.
I'm just relying on a few 1GB ones right now.

I've just tried splitting up book collections onto separate 2GB cards. However, it looks like the information on the last page of any book is lost every time a card is popped. Is this right?

I have collections of manga in lrf form on a 1GB card and I don't have any problem.
Maybe something about the card is corrupting the data.

Sounds like an odd problem to me.
