Wow! Thanks! That will save me a lot of trouble...

I have to admit that I didn't think of looking for a reading .prc software . I kept looking for a converter...

mobi2mobi.exe (windows, not perl) problem

I have a couple of books that I can't seem to get this working on. I am using the windows mobi2mobi.exe, not the perl and I have tried both command line and mobi2mobi gui. I have done this successfully on a couple books. For example, I had a "secure mobi" book from eharlequin that I first de-drmed using mobidedrm script and then, because the author was done as "firstname lastname", I used mobi2mobi.exe to set author to "lastname, firstname" so that the author showed in the proper alphabetical list in my "library" (mobipocket reader 6.0) and on my Kindle. I also did this with an Amazon azw file. De-drm'ed it to a mobi file and then because they had a comma at the end of the author's first name I used mobi2mobi to correct this. Worked fine.

So I have successfully used mobi2mobi.

But I'm having problems with some other files. I can not get the author name to be changed and when opening the files in mobipocket reader I get a "File Corrupted" error message. The files I am having problems with are not secure mobi files. They are unsecured. They are downloads from Ellora's Cave. I can put the file on my Kindle and it opens fine, but no author name shows and the title could be "prettied up." So that is what I am trying to do. But no love so far. I have put mobi2mobi.exe (and gui when I tried it) in the same folder as the book. I run standard command line: mobi2mobi.exe file.prc --outfile file.mobi --title "title" --author "lastname, firstname" and I do end up with a resulting mobi file, but after I copy it into my library folder and then open mobipocket reader, no author name is shown and when I try to open it I get the File Corrupted error. I've been making sure that the file names contain no spaces and use quotes around the author and title strings.

So, open to suggestions. I will try any suggestions when I get home this evening.

Strange. If you give me a pointer to a file or a file I will test it.

I'm PM'ing you with download site.

I've tried both the mobi2mobi.exe version 38 dated April and the newer July version uploaded by Gudy? a page back.

My exact command (from the directory that contains both mobi2mobi.exe AND the book) is:

mobi2mobi.exe womanontherun.prc --outfile womanontherun.mobi --title "Woman on the Run" --author "Rice, Lisa Marie"

My result is that I do get a womanontherun.mobi file. I copy it into my mobipocket reader library directory and open mobipocket. The file is listed by without the edited title and author and when I try to launch I get File Corrupted error.

I am uploading BOTH the original womanontherun.prc file that was the original download AND my output womanontherun.mobi.

When I try to unpack the file I get an empty html file which is what you get if the high compression format has been used. But the meta info in record 0 says that the ordinary palmdoc compression format have been used. So something is strange with the prc file. And FBReader cannot show the prc file properly.

What tool were you using to unpack to html? mobi2html? (I haven't looked into these tools yet)

So, if it is a problem due to compression, then would mobi2oeb or use of the mobihuff.py file be the appropriate next steps to try? I haven't looked into those much but a quick search of the forums on compression brought those two things up. Or were you using mobi2oeb too?

I recommend mobi2oeb, part of Calibre, to explode MOBI files, because it handles high compression. However, the original problem was with mobi2mobi which is supposed to work even with DRM present and even (I thought) with high compression.

Ok, even though I'm at work, I'm curious. So I installed Calibre and tried (from command line in the c:\program files\calibre directory where I also copied the ebook): mobi2oeb title.prc

Output error is: Cannot extract content from a DRM protected ebook.

The site purchased from does not require registration of PIDs and the file is usuable on both my PC and my Kindle. So what kind of DRM protection is it using?

Sounds like it's encrypted with a fixed key. It's a pretty rare situation so the tools don't support that.

So what header information is used for that and how can it work? Is the key in the kindle?

I assume that when mobi2mobi tries to add author information it will not set some field properly to indicate the encryption.

I tried to use mobi2htm to unpack the file.

The mobi2mobi converted file does not work on my Cybook but the original file did work. It is good to have the file as a testcase and I will make a ticket for it but I do not have time this week to try to fins a solution.

Thanks Tommy. There is no particular rush since the books do open on both my PC and the Kindle. But if there is a way to get them in a state where I can make the author name display and edit the title, then I'd love to do so. Interesting that they are locked this way but can be opened on any device to read. Maybe I should have chosen .lit format for some of these! (But everything else I have is mobi or azw, so I didn't change when I bought these.)

While you're trying to figure out that file, can you also see if it is the same issue as the Cybook Gen3 manual listed in the Mobileread's Cybook Gen3 Tips and Troubleshooting wiki.

This Cybook Gen3 manual also doesn't convert with mobi2html or mobi2oeb.
