It is not real until it shows up in upcoming works on his website. Pinterest is there for crafters. Someone probably showed off his/her skills with photoshop.

Yeah, I've done that myself. I made the above 3 when the first title of Cinder Spires was announced but there was no cover yet.

Maybe the original artist never claimed copyright? (it's not automatic)

Maybe the second artist is a child, trying to make a name for themselves working under moms/dads (the original artists) guidance?

As the saying goes, "An assumption is the first step towards a screw-up". We can't assume the second derivative work is not sanctioned. It may well be.

FYI, copyright in the US is automatic. You don't have to file for it. On the contrary you would have to jump through many many hoops to release something into the PD. Now it is possible the picture itself is in the PD, but highly unlikely for a traditional publisher.

Wrong. Copyright does not have to be "claimed". It exists the instant the work is created.
