So what's a good read similar to Alera or Cinder Spire? CS was really a fun read - I hope we don't have to wait too long to see how Folly's visions of the future play out...

The good thing about Cinder Spires is that it is meant to be only 3 books, maybe 6 if the first 3 turn out successful. So we probably end up with 6 just like Alera.

I liked Alera but thought it left a lot of untapped potential - IMO too much combat and not enough behind-the-scenes intrigue. Plenty there to revisit with a "next generation" if Butcher wanted to.

Is there a site for discussion of CS? I'd like to see a map of Habble Landing given that only one corner of the square habble would meet the wall of the round spire. From the story I pictured the shipyard extending a long distance along one side of the habble.

And how about a TV adaptation like The Magicians?

Yes, lots of potential for side stories and prequels or sequels. Codex Alera was just one story of basically one person plus entourage. I believe Jim Butcher limited the world building on purpose to leave room for additions. For what it was it still turned into a lengthy story due to complexity. Also it could easily be a twice as many books if more details were added.

Personally I think the balance in length and omitting too many details is done quite excellent in Codex Alera. IMHO, Jim is doing a greater job than, say, Tom Clancy or J.R.R. Tolkien by not making it at times too boring.

You can discuss here. Just be careful not to include spoilers without tags. The structure of the world (spires) is probably safe to discuss without mentioning special events and plots.

As for the habbles - all four corners touch the outside wall of the round spire, even in Habble Landing. The air dock is built outside the spire and required punching a hole through the outside wall of the spire.

To my knowledge it never released in hardcover. The first printing was the trade paperback. The one (trade) I ordered from Amazon was a POD that wasn't even in stock, it got printed the day I placed my order.

In your article it says (sorry paraphrased, not making them real links):

Quote:
Publication Order of Standalone Novels

Spider-Man: The Darkest Hours (2006) Hardcover Paperback Kindle
All three links go to the same page - the paperback.

Just finished 2nd book of Morris & Chastain series and I noticed quite a few grammatical or spelling mistakes. They don't look like OCR mistakes, but typing mistakes. Makes me wonder if a copy editor or at least proof reader would have helped. Anyone else notice that?

Small things like "now" instead of "know" or "do" instead of "to." E.g. this one that cannot be mistaken for dialect or something:
Quote:
"If you don't now where [he] is now..."
Theses are traditionally published - if they were self-published it would at least explain it a little bit. I have seen self published works without such obvious mistakes.

Yep, I noticed, a little disappointing since the author is a college professor.

But the problems were few enough and minor enough that their presence didn't really bother me, especially considering the price of the 6 books.

Well yes, they are appearing not excessively. Just enough to throw me out of the loop every now and then. How come he writes so good for so many pages, and then boom. In the acknowledgements he does thank his copy editor for catching a lot of mistakes - I shudder to think how it looked like before.

It is a good thing since that is the only nitpick I have so far about the books.
