Cool Aeronaut’s Windlass by Jim Butcher / By Jon Snow / September 4, 2016

Quote:
Aeronaut’s Windlass by Jim Butcher

By Jon Snow / September 4, 2016

The Aeronaut’s Windlass, the first book of Jim Butcher’s new fantasy series The Cinder Spires, was released in September 2015. I only just picked it up this summer, because I have an abiding distaste for hardback books (this often leaves me out of the loop following a book’s immediate release). The first time I saw this in paperback at my local Barnes and Noble, I snatched it up immediately, because I have enough affection for Butcher’s previous foray into fantasy, the six book Codex Alera series, that I was willing to gamble on him not being a waste of my money.

Ok, first, I FINISHED Aeronaut's Windlass - totally loved it and have recommended it to everybody. As mentioned, I put off reading this because I am not a fan of Steampunk, but this is way more 'fantasy' than Steampunk (IMHO). So, I'm a total fan.

Second, that trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them totally sells me on seeing that movie! I have some free movie tickets and have wondered what to use them on - so if I wait after the first week, I can see that too!

I still have the Codex Alera to listen to, but I'm putting that on hold to listen to the remainder of Discworld (I think I'm on book 16). But, you never know. I may break down sooner...

Only thing I can say about Codex Alera: once you start you will want to read (or listen) to all six books back to back. I tried, and failed, to take a little break between each book. It feels more like one big coherent story rather than six individual books.

Cool A possible Paul Blackthorne fix for any fans of his. . .

Paul Blackthorne played Harry Dresden on the SyFy channel's 2007 series, The Dresden Files (it was loosely based on Jim Butcher's book series). After The Dresden Files cancellation (SyFy cancelled it after only that one season) he then played in several TV guest roles and a couple of (less than) single season TV series. Then in 2012 The CW premiered Arrow which still exists today for a 6th season. In this series Blackthorne plays detective Quentin Lance.

Now I've personally never watched Arrow (tried to watch it once a year or two ago but it didn't appeal to me and I didn't even watch the entire episode). Anyway it has come to my attention that Arrow can now be binge-watched 6 days a week on TNT. So if anyone would like a Paul Blackthorne fix this news might be of interest to you.

He is actually quite good in that role. Added bonus are some guest appearances from Alex Kingston as his ex-wife.

I’m a total Jim Butcher newbie and only recently started reading The Dresden Files but this new series sounds exciting. I’m always leery about steampunk but I’m on board for this one!

Well, actually, it is a perfect $9.99 all the way to Storm Front for the Kindle edition. Some paperbacks even come up to almost $10 when I looked at Amazon. Both paperback and Kindle used to be around $8. I am sure Amazon could discount the paperbacks down lower, but that would show an even bigger gap to the ebooks. The fault lies entirely with the publisher.

So as much as it may hurt me, but since I am already so used to waiting, what difference is another six months going to do. So for Peace Talks I will be waiting for the ebook to drop down to $9.99 before buying.

It is not like I am going to run out of other more affordable books to read that are published by Indie, Inc. Especially those that are willing to put their books into Kindle Unlimited will have an even bigger chance to be read by me.

So there is that. If I stand alone, then I will stand alone.

Help! I'm trying to find that great pic of Harry Dresden riding sue, the green dinosaur. The latter is very well fleshed out in 3D art. I couldn't find it on google images and I'd really like someone to point to the right page to copy this image.
