Oh, drats. Now Mister has to step up. Maybe Bob has to by possessing Mister if that improves the brains. Although if Bob steps into a cat it will be mainly college cat fights? Poor Harry trying to protect his daughters.

For anyone who's still trying to decide whether to read Benedict Jacka's Alex Verus series, one of his books is on sale today. I figure if anyone on Mobileread is going to be interested in this series, it would be folks who visit this thread.

I can fully recommend this series. It is not only a good read, but also the world is well crafted as well as the magic system. Be aware though that the next installment will not be here before May 2017... It is finished, but is in the process of rewrites/proofreading.

Not so sure it is a good idea to start with book 3 though... The main part of the story can be read separately, but you will miss out on the big picture not even mentioning recurring characters.

Ah, thank you. Grabbed that. Now just need the rest of series on sale - or maybe library has them.

How many books total is there supposed to be?

If I am not mistaken, there are seven books published so far in this series :

1. Fated
2. Cursed
3. Taken
4. Chosen
5. Hidden
6. Veiled
7. Burned

I have three of them in my TBR, four yet to be bought, and all yet to be read! These books are in my long term reading plan.

The author usually writes one book every year, and as the last one came out in 2016 itself, Toxaris has correctly envisaged next publication in mid 2017.

And thank you, FizzyWater, for the link!

Thank you for that, but was more interested in how many there are supposed to be when fiished. Is the 8th the final book? Or is it another monster series like Dresden?

Ah.. here is a post of Benedict on his blog, which is more self-explanatory.

Well, it’s that time again. I’m at the stage where I’m getting started on Alex Verus #9.

For me, the start of a new first draft is the hardest part by a long way; the first chapter is always the most difficult one. On the plus side, once I do get that first chapter written, it’s all downhill from there, but getting to that point is not easy, mostly because to have done it, I need to have worked out an awful lot of the story already. In the past I used to draw out diagrams to keep track of the story lines, but nowadays I don’t. I’m not sure if that’s because I’ve gotten better and don’t need them anymore, or because the major story’s so complicated now that diagrams wouldn’t actually be all that much help.

It’s looking like I’ll be at NYCC for Friday, October 7th. More info when I have it.
IMHO, this series is likely to last longer.

I think it is comparable to the Dresden Files in that respect, although I have the feeling he is slowly working towards the end. I think that the next part is important (Burned ended at a very important stage I think). Depending how volume 8 will end, I think another 3-4 books in this series.

That is a strange explanation - a little different than Jim Butcher who already has a plan for 2 major events per book and simply fill in all the stuff around it. It will be interesting to see how the first chapter can be so meaningful.

Long gone are the times where fantasy could be fitted into 6 books as in LOTR. It is nice to have longer to read, but sometimes the waiting takes so long on unfinished series.

True, but not only were those books fatter, they also didn't really have a seperate major story in each book besides the red line.

What are you talking about fatter? Lord Of The Rings is only fatter if you look at the story in a one volume. There is three parts each containing two books. Every single book is smaller than even Storm Front, which I believe to be one of the shorter ones in The Dresden Files. I see roughly 24k locations for LOTR (including appendixes), 4k for Storm Front, 7k for Dead Beat or Skin Game, 8k for Cold Days or Ghost Story. Even Harry Potter is more words than LOTR.

But I see the point that LOTR simply was one gigantic task compared to smaller subplots each kind of finished in each book of longer series. Sometimes it feels drug out the way Tolkien kind of used too many words to say so little.
