Though personally I liked the first three books just fine. Perhaps that was because I'd seen the entire SyFy Channel TV series before starting reading the books. Also you might check out this redit discussion:

That's because they aren't sails. They're devices that collect the atmospheric etheric energy that is used to operate the ship's systems and devices. I believe that you may need to read the book!
