It's in a sub-genre in which I've read quite a bit over the last few years. Native American cops and PI's. The book is called Tall Man in Ray-Bans (John Tall Wolf #1) by Joseph Flynn.

I really liked J. R. Rain's first Jim Knighthorse book Dark Horse so last year I tried the Vampire for Hire series. Very enjoyable till the end.

I won't say why because I know you will read the spoiler anyway, and perhaps it will not bother you as it did me, but AFAIK they all are like this.
