What is the command used to download custom CSS on AO3 without manually adding it to the output CSS? I'm having trouble searching in defaults.

Thank for this! I'm testing it with scribblehub and it seems to work if I connect to a US network via a VPN. fails on my home (Asian country) network.

also as mentioned in your issue log, you need to set an agent tag or it does not work. e.g.

user_agent:Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0


Finally, what's the best way to get fanficfare to redownload the covers? it does not seem to do it when there are no updates or when you ask it to update the metadata or when you delete the existing cover and update. my "hack" is to go in and delete the last chapter of each epub I want a new cover for. but that's kind of slow.. any faster way?

'Update Epub Always' mode should work for you.

That's 'Overwrite Always'. There's a wiki page for Update Modes.

Alongside updating the titlepage (mentioned on the wiki), 'update always' will refresh the ToC if you change the chapter number settins.

After being distracted for a measly year I came back to try and organize my fic library and ran into the same issue and because I still do not like cleanup I came up with something different. My use case is attaching character "specializations" in freeform tags on AO3 to character tags e.g. if there is a freeform tag "dark Harry Potter" and a character tag "Harry Potter" then I would want the freeform tag gone and the character tag to be "Harry Potter.dark".

Instead of messing around with fanficfare for this, I found the Actions Chains plugin and chained together two actions:

1. Single field edit on character tags, where I compare each character against each tag. If a character is mentioned in a tag I subtract all mentions of the character from that string (essentially/hopefully leaving only the "specialization") and append that string to the character tag.
2. Single field edit on freeform tags, compare each character and each tag, if a character is mentioned in a tag, remove that tag.

I made it a bit (a lot) more complicated to make it more robust/handle edge cases and it's probably not the cleanest code in the world, but so far it works, I'm pretty happy with the result and I'm posting both to say "case closed" and if anybody else is having a similar issue maybe they can find some inspiration here.

Again, thanks for the help last time and thanks for the plugin in general, it's great.

(As a sidenote: I'm very aware that the time complexity on this thing is... not good. But as I'm only torturing my own computer and not AO3's servers I figure it's a fair tradeoff to the manual work I'd have to do otherwise )

I did something very similar myself. Except I wrote AC templates instead of doing single edit chains.

Basically my template
- first combines the tags, relationships, characters, and comments meta data fields into a single temp variable
- runs a bunch of code to extract whatever I want from that single combined variable. e.g. checking if there is an OC mentioned with something like

oc = contains(characters, '\ oc\ |\ oc,|,oc\ |\ oc\.|\(oc\)|original character', ',Type: Original Character', '');

I basically decided a set of about 50 tags (with a few variants for some tags)I actually care about and ignore everything else. Also have a bunch of tags to fix all the ratings and publishers to a set of consistent values and if-then-else clauses to create tags based on book sizes assigned to buckets (>200K, >500K, <10K etc.).

Made it much easier to find books by specific tags on my phone where the previous unstructured literally 100,000 tags (thank you AO3!) was unmanagable.

Thank you once again @capink (author of AC) for providing the chain iterator python code to run an AC over a very large library by breaking the selections into groups of 10 to 100 (you decide) and processing them bit by bit.

Is there any way to preserve hyperlinks when using FFF with AO3? AO3's native download option (which uses a calibre command to write the epub) results in preserved and select-able links in tags, author ships, etc. But with FFF it's only the text, no link preserved.

No. Well, story URL and author URL are, and series URL when it's there.

I'd have to do some substantial rearchitecting to put links on other metadata types.

And it would really only save you one click--story link, then click the tag.

Got the error "StartTag: invalid element name" on the cover page of a fic because the series name has "<3" and Calibre was getting confused by the "<" and then "</a>". First time I've had to use replace_metadata on seriesHTML to change the characters into a heart HTML code.
