I didn't ask before, but do you have the 'Mark Emails Read' feature turned on? Then the messages should definitely be marked read according to IMAP.

Is it safe to assume that there's no way for FFF to tell whether or not AO3 tags are "canonical"? (That is, tags that are officially wrangled and set in a hierarchy on the site for others to use, versus random text that people type in and pretend is a tag when really it's commentary. *koff*)

I've looked into that before. The only way I know to determine which tags are canonical (and get the canonical version) is to follow the link for each tag. Considering that would add dozens of extra site hits for many stories, I elected not to do it.

I did toy with the idea of caching tags after they've been looked up, but it's an awful lot of work just to work around AO3's design choices.

And wrangled tags aren't perfect, either. For example, the canonical tag for the character Miss Militia in Worm is Hannah | Hana (Worm). The canonical tag leaves out her 'cape' name that is used most of the time and can't decide which is the correct spelling of her secret identity name. That's not an improvement. I submit that all of the 'Tags with the same meaning' (even Miss Miliita) are better than the canonical one.

Ugh, yeah. I don't blame you.

I had a tiny hope that there was something about the tags that identified them (other than how they were categorized in AO3's internal database), so I could avoid all those rambling Tumblr-style tags that people seem to want to use and that make my library unsightly. I guess I just keep going through and periodically deleting all of those, then. Thanks for the quick and comprehensive answer!

There are a number of FanFicFare users that have spent a lot of time on their replace_metadata to normalize tags for their favorite fandoms, on AO3 and elsewhere.

One idea is that users could share their replace_metadata with others to avoid duplicating those efforts.

I wouldn't be against including something like that in the downloader if other users maintained the list.

Shouldn't be a problem -- anyone using the CLI version should (hopefully) know how to run the setup.py directly -- just grab the latest snapshot of the git master.

You should also be able to upload a development version to PyPI, and people will only be able to install it if they use `pip install --pre`

I have a very long list of replacing metadata, it's only characters and fandoms though.

I think that's probably far too individualized a thing, at least for me and my OCD.

That said, maybe some other folks would find it useful?

is there a way to get my calibre library to update to two places such as my one drive and dropbox folders? sorry if this isnt the right place for asking but i just wondered if anyone knew if it was possible

I use a file sync tool Allway Sync to do a sync from my Calibre library to other locations. I *ONLY* do a one way sync; my PC is ALWAYS the master copy.

This isn't really the right place to ask. FanFicFare integrates with Reading List specifically so FanFicFare isn't duplicating the device syncing that Reading List already does.

Syncing (AKA backing up) your library to more than one place is also outside scope of FanFicFare.
