I did run the RUNME.sh with version.txt replacement, but now I am stuck in a demo mode where there is no USB mass storage and no commands in the search bar work (keyboard stays up after I hit enter). Every minute or so there is a "Collecting Debug Info" window.
Any suggestions how to quite this demo? |

Just before that I was able to access SSH via the cable. It is such a roller coaster today.

Alright, my Kindle Scribe Odyssey finally ended!
Thank you Marek very much! I ended up using your upgrade-then-downgrade approach. Here is the summary: 0) Brand new Kindle Scribe - do not connect to network yet. 1) Check the version. Connect Kindle to PC, in File Explorer open hidden folder /system, open version.txt. If FW is 5.16.2.0.1 or earlier - you are in luck with LanguageBreak! Unplug Kindle from PC. 2) Connect to a public hotspot that requires login in a browser. 3) Kindle Browser will show up. In the address bar type ;enter_demo then hit enter on the keyboard. Restart Kindle (long-press, window pops up - restart). 4) Follor JB instructions in this thread's OP. 5) After the Chinese language selection, it will put you back to demo. 6) Do not leave demo yet, install both Marek's and NiLuJe's hotfixes first. 7) Then type ;demo then hit yes. It will ask about demo but actually let you in normal mode. 8) Here connect Kindle to PC and drop in NiLuJe's hotfix. 9) At that moment we are in the Amazon Out-of-Box Experience screen that lets you sign-in but doesn't have menus, search bars or other meaningful buttons. So, go to the Browser again as in Steps 2-3, this time type ;711 . A screen with network info will show up, but we only need to hit three dots in the corner - Update Your Kindle. I don't know if this hotfix reinstallation step is necesary, but just in case... 10) Restart Kindle Scribe TWICE. Do not sign-in anywere yet. This will make sure JB survives. 11) Sign-in to Amazon, and agree to install updates - this is the annoying part because of which I spent 26 hours in a row (with some sleep in between) ![]() 12) Once it updated, go to Airplane mode (to prevent any other updates). Goal is to NOT let happen another update OR factory restore before JB is recovered. 13) Use NiLuJe's K5 Jailbreak package, only extract emergency-bridge-recovery.zip's contents (four files) to Kindle's storage. 14) Restart Kindle, check that four packages are gone. ;log mrpi commands can be used again. 15) Install NiLuje's Hotfix via mrpi. 16) Use this script and run it with ;log runme : https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=469 17) Now that FW downgrade is possible, download earlier FW version. I went with 5.16.2. "Update" Kindle normally via Update Your Kindle (UYK). 18) Then install Install NiLuje's Hotfix via mrpi or UYK. Good luck! Last edited by mergen3107; 11-26-2023 at 01:22 PM. |

Another very important observation I found today:
do NOT spoof version.txt to a higher version ever, as I suggested here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=478 In my experiments I set it to 999,999, so any update check will report that "update" is lower than that version. However, this also murders the ability to install hotfixes! verson.txt should be updated with new update, but this is a footgun situation nevertheless... |

Has anyone experienced this too?
Two or times times out of ten normal restarts I did after successful JB, Kindle loads into a weird mode: none of the book/document thumbnails on home screen are loaded, including those I set for KUAL and KOL. There is also this message about debug collection that pops up every minute, if I hit any of the two buttons (close, raise a bug) then it freezes for quite some time. I was only able to restart Kindle again by long pressing the power button, because each time that windows closes it throws me out of any menu I am in, so I can’t get to “Restart” button. It goes away after a restart, but I am curious whether I should worry about his and fix it (I wish I knew how). |

Hi, I recently got my first Kindle device (K11). I’m an experienced Unix user and am really excited to jailbreak my device. I've followed the latest LanguageBreak steps on the official Github repo, and everything went smoothly. One minor problem is that after I installed the Update_hotfix_languagebreak-en-US.bin, I cannot find the mkk folder on my Kindle. However, I can still run `;log mrpi` or `;log runme`.
Then, I started to install the latest MR Package Installer, KUAL (coplate), USBNetwork Hack, and renameotabin. I believe KUAL and other plugins are successfully installed, and I tried to run the rename script in the renameotabin. It turns out that nothing happens after executing the script. It is supposed to reboot the device. I dug into the issue and found out that my KUAL runs the program as framework(9000) instead of root(0). I verified this by running a `whoami > mnt/us/dump_user.log` script in KUAL. Consequently, the USBNetwork Hack menu in KUAL does not work as well since it also requires permission with the root user. I'm wondering if I need additional steps to acquire root permission in KUAL, or if it is a known issue on the current KUAL or K11. I also have one more question about the `kh_msg` in the USBNetwork Hack script. It seems that my device doesn't have the kh_msg command. Should I install other packages to support this? Many thanks! Kindle firmware: 5.16.2.1.1 LanguageBreak: LanguageBreak-16.11.23.tar.gz MR Package Installer: kual-mrinstaller-1.7.N-r19303.tar.xz KUAL (coplate): KUAL-5b5d1d2-20231104.tar.xz USBNetwork Hack: kindle-usbnet-0.22.N-r19297.tar.xz |

I think I’ve seen it somewhere among root folders in SSH yesterday. I’ll double check later |

Hello, this is my first post on this forum. I don't need help since I am techie and been using linux since 1997 and owned many ereaders since the PRS-505 came out.
I have, however, mostly owned Sony ereaders and kobo ereaders but my PW5 was a gift from my sister. This is my first jailbreak and KUAL+KOreader truly unleashed the full potential of the PW5 for me ! I hope renameotabin is still relevant so I don't have to keep my device in airplane mode. However, I just primarily wanted to say thanks to Marek et. al. but since talk is cheap I will be buying Marek a few coffees sooner rather than later. |

Kindle paperwhite seeming unusable after trying language break
Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation)
5.16.2.1.1 I was trying to jailbreak my Kindle so i could read epubs. I started to follow the steps for languagebreak and got as far as step seven. now I see this demonstration device is either missing content or is disconnected from the network configure device every time I hit the screen the picture changes [actually pictures are also changing without any input from me] touching configure device does nothing Tried rebooting and just goes back to the same loop. Help |

You are on the right track!
Instructions says: do a secret gesture. This is: 1) Tap with TWO fingers in the lower right corner once 2) Then immediately after this: swipe with ONE finger from bottom right corner to bottom left corner. Last edited by mergen3107; 11-23-2023 at 02:13 PM. |
