do you have a reference for this?

this person had renameotabin and got auto-updated to 5.16.3, implying they had < 5.16.3 before and renameotabin didn't work.

just to follow up on my issues - i got everything working! i just followed this YouTube tutorial:

some differences between that video and the github README is
- doesn't include a `.demo/` directory
- includes a `patchedUks.sqsh` file

now things work wonderfully.

to re-do the jailbreak, i simply did a `DO_FACTORY_RESTORE` and started over.

Maybe this person installed but didn't activate it?
Or maybe he got the firmware file downloaded before, and reboot just applied it.
Hundreds of other persons on 5.16.2.* have their wifi on without auto update.

There might be another way to “block” updates, needs testing.
I put it in quotes, because it makes the update process fail with Error U007.

On 4PDA forum I described a long time ago how to block the userstore_reset and shipping_mode binaries that are activated by search commands:

Doing so caused any regular FW fail because the system hash sum is now wrong, and it spat out U007 error. However, this was on the old FW 5.9.7. I don’t know what ways things changed since then, but the idea might be useful.

So even if Amazon found a new way to load OTA updates, we might still have a chance to prevent the installation of them.

What do you guys think?

LCD turn on when the cover off / when I am click power button. LED light turn on into yellow light and when I am hold power button LED turn on into orange 5 times dots.

I did enable enable gesture unlock i think but i am not sure, because its can't hard reboot

I confirm, spent all day fighting brand new Scribe, but was able to install Koreader on it.

To get to the search "command line" on the main screen:

1. Set up my wifi router to limit connection speed to 500Kbps (I tried a range from 20 to 300Kbps, that did not work, Kindle considered connection broken)
2. Registered Scribe into my acount
3. Once it loaded to the main screen with search box, turned on Airplane mode.
4. Connected via USB and deleted partial update (somethign like update.bin.partial file). It got to 30MB max in all my tries, so plenty of time to stop it before it fully downloads (total size ~270-320MB)

I don't have success with going to Home screen on a new Kindle Scribe.

I limited the internet speed to 64 KB/s (kiloBytes), but there is non-skippable step where it downloads the firmware file.

I was able to hold power button and restart, then connect to PC and remove the update.bin.tmp.partial file.

Tried multiple times, once I let it go until 95% of the progress bar, then backed off again. The file reached 273 MB, that means it is not 5.16.3, but rather 5.16.4 or 5.16.5.

I also tried to update, it seems like it came with 5.16.2 out of the box. 5.16.2 update file was discarded by Scribe. However, 5.16.2.0.1 worked. I can verify the update in D:/system/version.txt file when I connect it to PC.

But the force-update screen is still there.

I was also able to drop DO_FACTORY_RESTORE file and Scribe did factory reset, each time greeting me with the same language selection screen.

Any ideas?

I can open Browser if I select a Hotspot Wi-Fi that requires signing-in. Can I enter demo from there? I remember there was a way to run files by typing "\\\file: ..." names in the address bar...

I am not exactly sure as to what you are trying to achieve? only way that i know of to activate demo is trough the search line, (or directly calling the lipc/bash file that activates it). for scribe you have to register your device first and then everything should work as intended.
