Because you're not running the right version.
(See this post, and the earlier from the same poster on that same page, where the issue was actually described in a complete, polite and useful manner...). TL;DR: Run the KDK-1 variant, *not* a Booklet build. |

I think its not in the guide but you need KUAL (coplate) for KOA3, at least I did all by the letter and after installation Kual launch doc didn't appear with norma one

Hi, I got Kual running with my own custom extension (doing a clock), but the "kual" menu, clock and battery bars will occasionally overwrite the screen up at the top. Is there a command that can be run to stop it overwriting this way, or to stop that refreshing? I saw the setting in the json for priority - is it linked to that? This is on a kindle touch.
Thank you. |

Nope, that's the stock system doing its usual duties (namely, pillow), which can be tricky to entirely unreasonable to deal with (see the KOReader startup script, which is probably unreliable on that front for early-ish FW 5.x versions, i.e., what you're running ;p), depending on exactly what you're doing.

ah that's a shame, thank you. I'm doing the literature clock thing which was on instructables from some time ago, but as an extension and my own code, as I bricked a kindle 4 when trying to use their code. I note that they had
/etc/init.d/powerd stop /etc/init.d/framework stop but the init.d folder is empty, powerd is superceded by the stop screensaver command, and I'm unclear on what stopping the framework was doing and am cautious about messing any further without knowing that I'm not going to break this one too. I soldered the serial to the other one so I should be able to recover it. It was actually still working for what I wanted it to do despite being on the "repair needed" until the eips command stopped updating the screen randomly, so it needs a full re-flash. After moving to KUAL I couldn't be happier tho - this is so much easier to get working. Thank you to everyone involved |

The "YKNR" screen is shown based on a dual startup failure counter (IIRC, 5 consecutive framework startup failures will trip it). After that, it'll only show for a while (I don't rightly recall the particulars of the second check), after which it'll display that on screen but shutdown the device.
That bit of nastiness was what originally drove building the suite of recovery pack tools: being able to connect over SSH during that brief period of time to interrupt the boot and fix it and reset the boot counters. (Speaking about FW 5.x here, I have no idea how it worked on earlier iterations). ---- FW <= 4.x uses sysvinit while FW 5.x uses upstart, which is why you can't really mix those up (even if there are similarities; but the upstart depchain is hilariously more complex). You should check out the script used to start up koreader - it's a good example of how to temporarily kill the Kindle UI without screwing up the device in the process
