Thanks for the image.

after writing the image to a new (8gb) sd card with win32 diskimager it booted perfectly.
but after turning it off, and turning it on 30 min later it still went in restoring mode.
is there another cause to this loop?

There might be something else failing, but, I would suggest doing a factory reset using the instructions on https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360017605274. Sometimes after using the image there can be problems and this frequently fixes them.

thanks for the instructions, can't find the pm option and thought that visitor messaging is the same thing at the beginning.
