There can be as few of them as you like. Just don't play. I'm perfectly happy to spend a few clicks a day to see if I could just maybe win a decent coupon, or a device, or whatever. Experience suggests I won't, but nobody's forcing me to play.

Do you know what the problems were?

Kobo still sell eGift cards on their New Zealand site, as well as physical gift cards in local shops here, so it makes me wonder why not in all countries.

They've quit selling the physical gift cards here for the most part. I used to be able to get my brother in Vegas to purchase them for me at Frys. They haven't had them at any stores where I live in years.

I am able to get electronic gift cards for Kobo from Swagbucks now, but it takes me a while to get enough points.

I could still order from Chapters in Canada, but there's no where on the US site now to enter the Chapters giftcards since the codes were different and required a PIN.

Huh? Over-response, much? I was just curious to see if some were reacting as I do, with the inference that perhaps the contests aren't as useful a marketing tool as they once were. Any ploy stales over time, especially with repetitition.

Glad you're still having fun with it. Good luck.

It's my understanding that it was because of "traveling" with giftcards--that it caused problems with geo-restrictions set by publishers as well as pricing issues, but I never traveled so I don't understand all of the logistics. The short and long of my understanding is that it was costing them money when it shouldn't have been.

Re:Gift cards

In the US, each state has its own laws and statutes regarding gift card usage. It has become a deterrent for some retailers to issue them directly. It's possible Kobo being based in Canada could create other issues with certain local statutes.

I'm not going to bother posting them here, as I dont think they ever get used, but I have quite a few 30% US codes if anyone wants them, just PM me.

I'm still in for the contests. There are always a few indies I'm interested in picking up, and 30% is a good discount on a book that lists at 1 to 5 dollars and I sometimes pick up a better code here. I don't bother with anything less than 30% -- anyone who is interested can PM me.

I'm waiting to see if Kobo releases an unlimited code during the contest as this is their usual MO.

I definitely still waiting on Kobo codes, mainly because it applied to books from publishers that I like to buy from. Anything 30% above is GREAT PRICE for me. So yeah, I still play these contests ...

And perhaps even more amazingly, the second part of the Kobo "refer a friend -> friend gets $5 and you do too" offer worked too, although it took from Dec 5 to Dec 11 for the "back-to-me" $5 to show up.

This one showed up differently - it came as an email with subject "You gave $5… and got $5 back!" Then when I opened the email and clicked on the "Redeem Now" button, it just went straight into credit on my account, and shows up as $5 under "Payment Information" in my profile in my account. I haven't yet actually used it, but it's showing up just as any other credit does, whether from gift card, or customer service, so I have to think it will be okay.

Pretty amazing - an entire complicated Kobo process worked as it should, even if it was a little bit confusing at times! Wow!

A couple of days after I opened the new account with my husband's new email address, he got an email saying "Don't forget... you've got $5!" in his Inbox. When I opened that email, there was a link saying "Shop Now" and when I clicked on that, it led to the Kobo site, with an open window saying:

The credit didn't show up in the normal "Payment Info" part of the account page, but when I hit the Continue button, then picked a book that was $7.99, put it in my cart, and then checked out, the $5 showed up, not as a coupon, but just as a credit. And, the best part was that I had put a non-couponable book in my cart, and since it seems to be a credit and not a coupon, it worked. So I got a new-ish Penguin book for $5 off.

Now I'll wait to see if I get the $5 credit actually coming back to my account - I'll update here if the second part works.

P.S. The way the email to his account was worded, I'm not sure whether I needed to open the new account first or not...but hey, somehow it worked.
