Yeah, it helps the flow for those who aren't interested in the codes.

On my netbook a long string of codes can easily take up the whole screen. I'd imagine it's worse for folks accessing from a mobile phone.
Also, giving the country that the codes are valid for and then putting the codes in a spoiler tag might mean I don't have to bother with them at all. |

I have eight books on my Amazon wish list. I've just checked them on Kobo. 4 aren't even on Kobo and the other four are so much dearer that I save just pennies even with 30% off coupons. I just don't understand why Kobo are so much dearer when these books have a set publisher price.

The High Kings Golden Tongue by Megan Derr. It's £5.65 on Kobo and £4.53 on Amazon
A Samhain pre order for the 24th is Unnatural by Joanna Chambers, that is £3.83 on Kobo and £2.84 on Amazon (it would fall within this competition) The other two I checked today are Josh Lanyons Jefferson Blythe, Esquire and Sue Browns The Rogue Wolf. Thank you.
The High Kings Golden Tongue is showing $6.99 at both Amazon and Kobo in the US. Unnatural is $4.24 and $4.99 respectively in US. It appears to be a UK issue. Perhaps, Amazon is absorbing some of the VAT and Kobo isn't? |

High Kings Golden Tongue by Megan Derr is $8.99 on Amazon and $6.99 on Kobo for me.
Unnatural by Joanna Chambers is $4.99 on Amazon and same on Kobo. I do not buy much on Amazon since for me everything is usually from 1 to 3 $ more then on Kobo. Some are same price. So for me Kobo is a better deal, especially with the coupon codes. |

I think Kobo inflates its prices in part to offset the monthly contests. That's why garden variety codes of 25% and 30% are roughly a wash with the Amazon price and coupons start to get scarce at the 45% level. I wonder what percent of its sales of couponable books is made without a coupon being used? I imagine it's quite low, as certainly regulars have sussed out the system by now.

I did some research on a small publisher book I wanted--it was 2.99 (or 3.49 or some weird small price) on Amazon and 7.99 on Kobo. I wrote the author, thinking he had control. He supposedly asked his publisher to match the price on kobo and they never did (and I never bought the book). Also, as an indie, I can set different prices for each country, whether it is on Kobo or Googleplay or Amazon. I seriously doubt that ANY publisher has less functionality that any indie. I have to watch fluctuations with currency because it can vary by quite a bit and if I have my prices set wrong, I can fall below some necessary thresholds for maintaining certain commissions. Publishers will often have sales in one or two countries only (I don't know why.) |
