1) Find book.
2) Hit "Buy Now"
3) No stored credit card, so screen appears offering to let me enter credit card info or select Visa Checkout - I select that and then hit the blue Visa Checkout button that appears at the bottom
4) Sends me to a pop-up where I can sign in to Visa Checkout; my email address is already pre-populated
5) Enter password and hit "sign in" button
6) Another pop-up screen which has a big yellow "Continue" button, which says it will take me to Kobo to complete my purchase. I hit this button
7) I am taken to the normal checkout screen, with the green buttons at top and bottom, both of which say "Complete Purchase". These look like the normal buttons, and not like the different purplish "Place Order" button shown in the instructions from the email about the offer that Kobo sent me.
8) No credit card shows up, and I have zero store credit balance. I hit "Complete Purchase" and get "Oops! Something went wrong. Please review your payment information and try again."
9) Click out of that screen and my credit card is now populated in the field.
10) Try again, still doesn’t work.
11) Delete card out and repeat. Still doesn’t work

I’ve also tried different browser, different credit card (both that I’ve tried are good, and still working at other sites), now going nuts, and hoping someone can spot where it’s going wrong…any help gratefully received…
I just tried and had the same error, but it worked when I tried again. The second time I tried though, I wanted to verify that I was using Visa checkout, so I selected edit pay info and had to sign in again. I don't know if it that second signin was what made it work, but it worked.

Now I am wondering if it actually used Visa checkout. I've never used it before and I don't see any way of seeing charges on the Visa checkout website. Does anyone know how to tell what payment method was used?

I had wondered the same thing since it just ends up looking like you used the credit card. But later I saw the $10 credit was in my account.

Well, based on Purple Lady's post third above, I tried it twice in a row, and it worked the second time. If that is really what it takes it is totally bizarre! (But, this is Kobo...so nothing is bizarre)

I too am now wondering if it used Visa Checkout, because it looked as if it was just using my credit card. lkmiller, how long did it take for your credit to show up?

My credit also showed up today - pretty speedy for Kobo!

I have just now tried the same thing with my husband's account, and again, I had to try twice. I have now figured out, though, what I think is happening.

The first time when I hit the Visa Checkout button, it took me to the Visa Checkout sign-in pop-up window, I logged in (since he also has a pre-existing Visa Checkout account), and then it took me to the Kobo "buy" page. However, at the top, there was no card listed. So when I clicked on the green "complete purchase" button, it gave the same old error message.

Then I deleted the book out of the "buy" page, returned to Kobo home, and tried to buy the book again. This time, his credit card showed up at the top as a payment method, and, although there was nothing that I saw that indicated this was a Visa Checkout card, that's the only way it could have gotten there, since I had deleted out his other payment options before starting the process. And this time the sale went through.

This is the same procedure I followed with my account, although I didn't notice the absence or presence of a card listed at the top of the "buy" page when I did that one. And, as I said above, that account now has the $10 credit in it as of this morning.

So, it somehow seems to be connected to having to cycle through twice - maybe once to get logged in to Visa Checkout, and then a second time, so Kobo picks up the info and gets it into their system. Perhaps this only happens if you have a pre-existing Visa Checkout account, but in any case, this method has now worked twice, at least for the purchase of the book, in two different Kobo accounts, with two different Visa Checkout accounts.

My fingers are now crossed that my husband also gets the credit in his account - and I'll get to spend it

And karma to Purple Lady for the "do it twice" suggestion!

It's not just if you have an existing Visa Checkout account. I created an account on my first try and still got the error.

Of course you'll get to spend it. What's yours is yours and what's his is yours too, right?
