Been using my Aura HD since April now and overall I think I'm pretty satisfied with the firmware now after getting used to it (coming from Kindle).

The one thing that really bugs me are the tap zones available. I use the setting that has the right and most of the middle of the screen set for page forward and the left side as page back (middle selection on my device). My problem is I feel the page back zone is too wide (approx 1-1/4" wide) making it a stretch for my thumb (& I have fairly large hands) to reach across to page forward if I'm holding the device in my left hand, meaning I sometimes end up paging back without meaning to. I'm guessing the page back strip isn't so wide on the 6" devices and it gets blown up proportionately for the larger HD screen which is why it's so large. Regardless of the reason it's the main thing (the other being sometimes having to tap 2 or 3 times for page forward to work) that impedes my reading enjoyment on the Aura HD.

I just do a small left-hand thumb swipe to page backwards. No reaching required.

What I'd like is for the top tap zone to go back to its page turn function, not being yet another wodge of space reserved for bringing up the menu.

After trying to restore my Glo for about 3 hours last night to a lower version firmware, at this point I'd be happy if the only change they ever made again was to give us a choice to not update the firmware.

I echo and second that sentiment to the letter.
It seems to me that most issues arise from sideloaded books, it's almost as if they're trying to pull a iTunes on us sideloaders,

Why don't they give the user the option of choosing a previous firmware version in a menu within the desktop ?.

Explain something to me please....

How on EARTH do you expect a device running an OLD version of f/w to magically gain a feature to prevent it updating?

I know... it's an impossible dream. If they had that feature from the beginning though, I'd be a lot saner.

I'm at the point of looking for a new reader, but a good front light it pretty much a necessity at times for me.

Rockbox's desktop app does this very well, their desktop app gives the option of doing a manual install or auto install. Their desktop app is sophisticated (open source) in that it allows the user to control the device/firmware, not the other way around.

It is possible to manipulate "0's" and "1's" into anything with regards to software, it's the developer which is the limiting factor.

Yes but understand that the device will also update via WiFi if it is enabled.

Sure Desktop could do magic to prevent downloading of updates but my whole point is that the f/w out there is DESIGNED to update via WiFi IF enabled.

OK, with wifi, why not program the device to give the user the option of firmware installation ?.
That would also have the benefit of allowing the user to save bandwidth for more important tasks like downloading books in a area where ISP speeds are low or restricted.

Because Kobo, like any other company that produces software, only want to support one version. Giving you official options to downgrade the firmware implies they will support that as well. There are ways to avoid updating the firmware. Or you can easily downgrade it yourself manually.

That doesn't make sense. Previous firmware versions are not supported at all, so require no maintenance.

err nope.
This forum is littered with the skeletons of those trying just that, me being one of them.

I'll note that you skipped the next sentence in your quoting. But I will rephrase it:

Giving a user a way to officially install something says that you support that thing. And it doesn't matter how much you say that it is unsupported, support requests will come in.

"Littered"? How many is that? 1, 10 or 100? More? And how many were because they didn't follow the instructions? It is easy: Factory reset, connect to a PC and copy some files. If you don't do the factory reset, there is a good chance it will fail.

Perhaps a sticky with clear and concise steps might save the day ?.

1). Factory reset. ( caution: all data will be lost).
2). Connect to PC. (use kobo desktop or not ?).
3). Overwrite/Replace folders/files "xyz" on device.

and according to "DNSB", it's a bit more complicated than that, you've omitted a crucial step.

You really think I was trying to give detailed steps? If I had been, the post would have been at least 10 times as long. I was purely giving the spirit of the action. It is not hard. It just requires paying attention to what you are doing. And not having something else go wrong causing the device to not install the firmware properly.

I'm tempted to say that no.. David did NOT omit any steps. He gave instructions on how to downgrade, NOT instructions on how to ensure the device did NOT upgrade after that.
