Caecilia Heavy totally doesn't look anything like Caecilia itself. Also, the entire Caecilia Heavy paragraph seems to be in italic.

(Also, are these fonts free to distribute, like DejaVu is? If not, you may want to do this by PM...)

Caecilia Heavy is actually PMN Caecilia 85 (I think). It doesn't display in all italics on my PW2. Maybe it displays differently on a PW1. Embedded fonts can be kind of finicky on Kindles.

None of these fonts look as thick as I would like, though.

In case you are wondering: I can't make DejaVu Serif any thicker. If I do, then letters are going to start touching, and letters like such as "e" will start to get filled-up whitespace.

So Amazon says it will replace Charis SIL with a better font yet it allows Simon & Schuster to use Adobe Garamond as a body font. Amazon needs to go get therapy. That means any employee involved in this stupid decision.

That's sheer speculation, but it makes sense--why else mention solely one font?
I just downloaded the sample of the latest Star Wars eBook from Amazon and guess what? Charis SIL is embedded. One reason Charis SIL is embedded is that it does look better on then most default fonts use with ADE be it ADE for the computer, tablet, phone, eInk. Back when it was being embedded, most ADE installations used a really poor default font. Also, it has enough extended characters to prevent the ever popular ? in place of some extended character. Seems Amazon is all talk and they do indeed leave Charis SIL when it's embedded. Charis SIL displays fine (except for the line-height but that's a KF8 bug) on a Kindle Touch from what I've seen.

A bit kludgy, but it works.
It's actually better to do a Tweak Book, edit the CSS to dump the font-family lines and then let Calibre put the ePub back together. No need then for a conversion and code changing.

I have the PW1 and couldn't even figure out how to get fonts on there and then I realized, I didn't really want to to that in case something goes wrong.

So I tried the embedding to see what another font would look like, but none of the books I tried it on show it on my PW.

Oh well, it is what it is.
Did you go to the Aa menu and turn on publisher font if it's allowed?

  • DejaVuSerifEInk (by Katsunami)

  • Amasis

I just wanted to see what various fonts would look like on my PW2.

I deleted the ePub and mobi attachments because I'm not sure about the distribution of all of these fonts. I attached a screen capture from PW2 in their place.
None of those fonts look nearly as good on a KPW as my Charis SIL Modified. Give it a try and I think you'll agree.

The option wasn´t there. No publisher font.

That is your opinion.

Charis SIL Modified has several problems with kerning, such as the "hi" combination.

The number of PM's I got with regard to my own modified fonts prove that there is a significant number of people that also don't think Charis is the one font to rule them all

I haven't tried the Charis Modified yet, but to my eyes the modified Deja Vu doesn't look much darker or thicker than the supplied Caecilia. I would definitely have to bold it to make it work. It is also a tad wider per character, meaning you get less words per line. That makes a huge difference on a 6" screen, especially since the PW2 doesn't hyphenate. I hate large gaps in justified lines and large gaps at the end of left aligned lines.

Not picking a side in which is better....I will say they are BOTH a significant improvement over the stock fonts. I thank BOTH of you!
