Caution is needed because indiscreetly applied they mess up with subscripts, superscripts, drop caps, even may cause overlapping of adjacent texts if they are in different fonts.

Using negative margins could actually break the Kindle as it might try to write text outside of the screen. It's the same reason why you should NEVER move a window partly off-screen in Windows.

Yes. You really need to know a little bit about CSS to mess around with this. In particular, doing something willy nilly like this

P { margin-left:-30px ; margin-right:-30px}

may work with some books but may cause severe tire damage with others.

The good news is a jailbreak is out and hopefully JBpatch will be updated for pw2 soon and we can stop messing with our books.
