You can upgrade Calibre and the Tools without problems most of the time. The things you shouldn't upgrade are ADE 2.0.1 and Kindle for PC, as long as they work without issue.

Anyone successfully installed K4PC 1.15 with Wine? If so what version of wine did you use? I'm failing with 1.62.

K4PC 1.15.43061 runs fine here, using wine 1.9.6-1 (on Arch Linux).

I haven't really tested all the functionality since I usually use my Kindle Touch.

The reports I have received are that DeDRM 6.4.0 works with new installations of Kindle for Mac and Kindle for PC, even version 1.15 (downloaded from the Amazon website, not the Mac App Store or Windows 8 App Store version) . Thank you to all who have tested it and reported results.

I cannot comment on Linux issues here. Alf's blog or my github repository are the appropriate places to report problems.

Huh? I'm using ade 4.5.x, and it seems fine icw this tool. Why would you recommend staying with 2.01 specifically?

Because it's possible to download ePub eBooks with ADE versions past 2.0.1 that use a new DRM method that the tools cannot handle.

Later versions of ADE support a new encryption method which has not been "cracked", and there is a possibility that at some point bookstores will start serving books that use the new, stronger, encryption to devices with later version of ADE.

Personally it's not something I'd lose any sleep over.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to upgrade wine.

I use K4PC to download and de-drm as it's more convenient than plugging the Kindle in all the time.

Incidentally, in terms of functionality, I had to switch to list view a couple of versions back because in cover view the covers were not displaying and I couldn't identify the new book. Be nice if that works again.

I've seen a few people run into this over at the blog and Harper's Github. I think it was with smaller stores, but the new drm is definitely starting to be put into use.

You wouldn't lose any sleep over the fact that book stores start serving books using uncrackable (or as of yet, uncracked) DRM? I would. It would instantly make me not buy any more new books.

Same here. I would still buy new books but only those free of DRM. Fortunately many of the authors I tend to read opt for this.

There are most definitely some stores that use the new DRM.

Using later versions of ADE when the old version is still available and works, is just utterly foolish (unless you simply don't value DeDRMing your books).

Whether the book refuses to download with older versions of ADE (alerting you so you can return it) or encrypts itself with the new DRM when initially available, thus permanently ruining the book, but falls back on the legacy DRM with older versions of ADE, there is certainly a risk, and an advantage to staying with ADE 2.0 -- and sticking your head in the sand is very, um, bad advice.

wine 1.6 was released in 2013, wasn't it?
I don't understand people who use non-rolling-release distros with horribly out-of-date software.

Cover view works fine for me ATM.

It's already why I don't buy books from Apple except on VERY rare occasions.

I like the idea of rolling distros but whenever I've tried to use them in practice it's ended up being lots of work. Mind you I haven't tried for a couple of years.

Of course you're going to tell me it's easy-peasy and you never have any problems with bleeding-edge software etc. :P

Meanwhile I've hit a snag trying to build wine. There's an upstream Ubuntu bug that's stopping me installing both 32-bit and 64-bit libc6-dev.

Update: OK so winehq has an page on how to get around this problem, or there's a PPA. I think I'll try the later.
