Older versions of DeDRM work with older versions of calibre, even better than the current version does with calibre 5. You can ask for help at either Apprentice Alf's Blog or Apprentice Harper's GitHub.

Your changes are slim since 1.17 isn't working for you. You would have to find a version of Kindle for PC that will work on your system. The most recent version is not going to run there.

Yes, you'd be wanting about 10 amazon books to justify a S/H Kindle. Also S/H the risk is it's blacklisted. Someone else here would know the minimum model to get. You only have to register it to your account and then it doesn't matter if the battery dies.

Interesting, thanks for testing. I did wonder if it was my probably very old version of Internet Explorer that was the issue... Although the message I'm getting is : "A problem occurred - please enter a valid email or phone number" (translated from French).

See, that's odd: the version of Kindle for PC I originally got from the Amazon website did work, I had not issues logging on then! So I don't know...

"Username's Kindle Cloud Reader" still shows in my Amazon account. Would deregistering that help?

Me again:

I identified a version of DeDRM Tools that worked with my older Calibre: version 6.8.1. I added that to Calibre without difficulty.
Then I realized that method 4 did require a functioning older version of Kindle as well... Back to that, then. I installed Kindle 1.24.3. But when I tried registering it, Internet Explorer went nuts: two windows kept opening and closing, and the logon window kept reloading, so I could never input my information.

Giving up on method 4, I moved to method 2 b): I reinstalled Kindle 1.33.62002. I was able to re-register it without any difficulty. Then I launch the BAT file found here. Then I re-downloaded my book, imported it into Calibre, and tried to convert it again.
Well, it failed again, but this time the message is different: "Conversion impossible - this book is locked by DRMs."

Any idea where I can go from there, if anywhere?

Well, it's the logon window that Kindle opens that is Internet Explorer based. I myself never use IE, and it is very much NOT my default browser.
If you know of a way to change this behavior, I'm interested!

Or Waterfox, Safari, Opera, Brave or even Edge at a pinch. IE has never ever been a good idea except some companies have badly designed Intranet internal applications (even with Active X!) that needs it.

Yes, default applications in wherever settings or Control panel has it in whichever version of windows.
Also try in File Explorer to right click on an HTML file and select the desired browser. But Amazon Kindle Program will be using the system default, which is NOT the same as the Explorer Window double click on an HTML file. The same place sets the default email program too.

That is surprisingly good news. There were signs that Amazon would no longer support Windows 7 in Kindle for PC versions after 1.32.

That is also somewhat good news. You have the book. You just need to get DRM removal working.

Some have reported success with installing and logging into Kindle for PC 1.17 over top of installing the latest version (without deregistering or uninstalling the current version).

Impossible to Logon with Older Versions

I set up a new computer using Windows 10 Pro version 21H1, and used a saved Kindle for PC version 1.24 installer. It installed fine, but it's impossible to register. The sign in screen for Amazon goes completely bonkers and constantly refreshes itself every second.

I did some extensive searching and it turns out that this started several months ago. It is no longer possible to register a Kindle for PC version prior to 1.28 it seems.

I registered 1.17 just two weeks ago (like you, new computer). No problems, other than that it keeps offering me 1.30 on startup.
