There are several unusual things about that book.

It appears to be available for delivery only to KFX capable Kindle devices. The free sample can actually be downloaded in KF8 format, but I strongly suspect the book itself is only available in KFX and cannot be manually downloaded. (I am not willing to pay $18 to find out for certain.)

The Look Inside preview looks new. It allows a choice of fonts for viewing, which I have not seen before in other books.

The publisher shows as "Random House India". I wonder whether the KFX limitation is specific to this publisher/market because of the stronger DRM it provides. It is something to watch for from other publishers.


Added: I looked at other recently published books by Random House India and they mostly appear to have the same limiations.

I believe that it is a mistake on Amazon's part to allow the sample to ever be downloaded as an azw3 file since it appears that the book isn't available in that format if purchased.

Even worse once you download the sample it gets added to your account and can be accessed via the Kindle Cloud Reader (read.amazon.com) even though the description of the book shows "This title is not available on Kindle Cloud Reader." That inconsistency could lead someone to read the sample on KCR and then purchase the book only to find that the full version is not readable that way.

It's a mess. What if someone who has an older Kindle wants to read that book? Or someone who has wired internet and no wifi? Sorry, only on your computer, you cannot use your Kindle?

Do you mean using Kindle4PC? You can disable KFX downloads and get KF8 with the risk that a book in only KFX will not download. See the first message in this thread or check message #966 for a batch file to disable KFX. It needs to be run to launch Kindle4PC and also requires that Kindle4PC not be the default device.

If you mean copying a book from the latest Kindle firmware, not much joy to be found there.

I was wondering if that Penguin India eBook would be able to have the DRM removed. But probably not given that the list of devices are ones that can handle KFX. If this is the way Amazon is going, then I'll not be buying from Amazon.

I was curious so I purchased a less expensive book by the same publisher. That book is only made available in KFX format and uses a new form of KFX DRM that I have not seen previously.

As far as I can tell there is nothing special about the contents that would require KFX for rendering. The limitation to KFX format seems to be only for the enhanced DRM that it provides.

Yes. those people would be unable to read this book.

Apparently stronger DRM is more important to the publisher than flexibility of use by customers. Hopefully other publishers will not follow this lead.

I find it highly unlikely that this is accidental. It looks like a pilot project between Amazon and a single publisher to me. There is a new set of downloading restrictions, a new enhanced DRM, and a new "Look Inside" format associated with these books.

I agree that negative feedback to Amazon and the publisher is a good idea, but since these books are intended for a market in another country I am not going to bother.

Good point. But, that could also explain a mistake when adding the books.

I completely agree. You or me complaining can be ignored as we are not customers. But, the original reporter should. Especially if they can say, "This means I cannot read the book on my Kindle."

checked on kobo - #1 huge price difference around $4 vs $18 so I would definitely click on this book is cheaper elsewhere, if amazon still has that option

#2 Kobo says "Download options: EPUB 3 (Adobe DRM)" but with amazon it's hard to tell what the download format is

also, since changing to download via USB a while back, amazon has not given me this option to use on any samples

Yesterday when I tried Transfer via Computer to my Oasis, I got a message telling me it was currently unavailable but to try later. After seeing your post today, I tried with my Paperwhite 2 and my Oasis and got a Sorry page unavailable for both. The only other Kindle on my account is a Touch and that wasn't a choice.
