So far I can't find an e-book which requires 1.26 and above. I did come across some books requiring K4PC but without version restrictions. No more time to spend now. Hopefully there is someone on here with one of these e-books who can install 1.26 and the tools and see if decryption works.

Okay, I'm trying to nail down what we know and what we still need to confirm. Please let me know if I'm misunderstanding anything or if you can add anything.

The latest Apprentice tools 6.8.0 work with Kindle for PC (and Mac?) version 1.26 and earlier.

KFX downloads can be disabled in Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19-1.24 using the Method 2 in the first post. And Kindle for Mac can continue to be disabled that way through version 1.26 (1.27?) with the extra precautions described in odamizu's post linked under Method 2.

KFX downloads can be disabled in Kindle for PC/Mac 1.28 (current version) with the patches in apprenticesakuya's post above.

There is an open issue over at the GitHub with someone trying to decrypt a book that appears to be 1.26+ only but they are on a Mac. So does anyone have a good link for Kindle for Mac 1.26?

Also can anyone confirm that a brand new installation of Kindle for Mac and the tools will now work on Catalina? Without needing to update from a working setup on Mojave?

A couple more thoughts:

Has anyone had a chance to confirm that if you have Kindle for PC/Mac 1.28 and have disabled KFX downloads, you can DeDRM the older formats with the latest tools?

As for books directly from E-ink Kindles, I think darryl had success using Apprentice Sakuya's code (just prior to 6.8.0's release) with a KFX book downloaded to an Oasis, correct? I was able to successfully use 6.8 on an old KFX download to my Oasis. But after removing, re-downloading, and re-importing a fresh copy of the same book today, DRM remains. So it seems like the latest Kindle firmware is doing the same thing as Kindle for PC/Mac 1.27 and later.

Correct. It succeeded at first. Then, after the tools were released, it still succeeded with the same book. However, removing it from the device and re-downloading resulted in failure. This is consistent with version 4 encryption being applied to the new download.

What am I doing wrong?
I have tried 1.26, 1.27. 1.28.

I only get this when I try to find my books.

This must be so obvious but I cant figure it out.

Any help appreciated.

Should I try again, if so which method.
Firstly, thanks to all those updating and shedding light on what is happening.

I am unfortunately one of those lucky winners with a book that requires me to have the latest Kindle for Mac to download it. Earlier versions will not let me download the book, etc etc. (We tried over on GitHub plenty of options to no avail)>

Am I to try again with the latest method(s) or is this still irrelevant to me at this point?

(I am on Mac OS Mojave, Book I am trying to DeDRM is Pearson branded and will not download on anything but 1.28)

I tried in 1.26 and it did not work
Followed instructions from Odamizu's post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=508, and it did not work... Received this fun little error:

Unfortunately trying the patch on 1.28 Does Not Work Either
I then attempted to do the patch with the batch script for 1.28. And the Kindle App will not even open afterwards.

We wanted to test with 1.26 because that version will still download e-books using voucher envelope versions 2 or 3, which the latest tools will decrypt. Version 4 was implemented in K4PC/MAC 1.27 and cannot be decrypted by the latest tools. The book page on Amazon for these books contains a warning that the latest version is required, with further details saying 1.26 and above. It seems Amazon is yet to update this information, and will only allow the download of these Pearson textbooks using v4 voucher envelope, which is not supported by 1.26. The web page information should not now state that 1.26 is supported.

The best chance for anyone to decrypt these books is to download a copy in 1.27 or 1.28 now and keep it safe in the hope that the tools will later support decryption of v4.

Failing this there is an outside chance that Apprentice Sakuya’s patch to 1.28 will get a kf8 version of these books, but I would not be holding my breath!

KFX downloads can be disabled using Method 2 (chmod -x) for Kindle for Mac 1.19 thru 1.28.

Curiously, for Kindle for Mac, apprenticesakuya's patch does not appear to work on Mojave or Catalina. But it does work on High Sierra.

Mojave and Catalina users can still use chmod -x on 1.28.0 (and chmod -x will still cause Kindle app to crash on close).
