Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre

I've never used mine - just copied the serial number. I ordered it direct from Amazon so I'm guessing it was pre-registered.

It is also possible to convert the vast majority of books downloaded using the latest release of Kindle for PC (version 2.1.0) if both the DeDRM (version 10.0.9 beta) and KFX Input plugins are installed in calibre. Only books that Amazon always delivers with the strongest encryption will not work with that method, and no other method is likely to work for those books anyway.

Are there any specific disadvantages of KFX compared to the older formats? Specifically when converting them to ePub.

KF8 format (azw3) is usually the closest to the original format provided by the publisher. So if you are a purist that format is preferable to KFX, if you can obtain it.

I compared 5 ebooks downloaded as AZW3 and KFX and either extracted using KindleUnpack for AZW3 or KFX input for KFX conversion to ePub. The KFX conversions were a lot harder to clean up since the conversion process is more of a decompilation and the output ePub was a pain to clean up. The AZW3 to ePub were a lot closer to the original ePub.

You can install old version of Kindle for PC, version 1.17, and then DeDRM 10.0.3 and KFX Input will work. But newest books from 2023 can't be used in KfPC 1.17, but older one should be fine.

KFX Input isn't needed with 1.17, as it only downloads mobi and azw3.

I had to keep both the old version of kindle pc (to remove drm from ebooks) and the new version (to be able to download manga, that download in the old format).
Finally I can go back to one version only.
Let's hope this time amazon will not waste time stopping people from remove the drm from their own book.
I started to use kobo a lot more, but they got a drm too so I'm not that sure it's a better alternative... I just hope both removing drm from amazon and kobo ebooks will always be an easy option...

If you are downloading from the menu options on Kobo, you will either get an ePub file which not DRMmed or a .acsm file which using Adobe's DRM scheme which DeDRM works with.. If you sync books from Kobo, you will get a kepub which uses Kobo's own DRM which the OBOK plugin works with.

Additionally, you do not need a Kobo device to download from the website. (Glares at Amazon.)

Or indeed at all to read ebooks from Kobo, even without Calibre. Of course having a Kobo and Calibre is good

Amazon isn't just DRM, it's a walled garden, like Apple. Amazon even have their own versions of Android TV, streaming stick and Android Tablet to try and lock you in.

I already know that... but kepub and adobe drm are still drm... The only good thing is that drm-free ebooks are actually drm-free on kobo, that's why i started to use it a lot more.
I'm not saying amazon is better... but I got a lot there already so if there is a new way to remove drm I like it.

Amazon has released Kindle for PC version 2.2.0. The main documented change is that the View menu now includes a Compact List option that shows more books by reducing the size of the cover image in the list. (I hope that they decide to do something similar to the e-ink Kindle firmware.)

Undocumented is that this new version now downloads comics in KFX format instead of KF8 (AZW3).
