Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre

Old enough? I realize you want older because less expensive, but even a brand new E-ink Kindle will work for "download and transfer".

I need older so don’t get the current format downloaded that I understand is difficult or impossible to deDRM. I need to remove DRM to reformat for reading on my Kobo.

If I have missed something and DRM can be removed by Calibre from the latest format, please do let me know.

My PW3 (and Oasis 2 I gave away) mostly get KFX if they are allowed to download directly, but never get/got KFX from Browser download.

The Scribe might result in KFX downloads. But that would be a mad thing to buy.

As stated by previous posters, you can use any eink Kindle for Download & Transfer (which doesn't mean direct downloads to the device, but downloading the file to your computer) and be able to remove the DRM. It doesn't have to be an old model. This applies to purchased books; Kindle Unlimited books can't be deDRMed this way.

From the first post in this thread I see that a KFX formatted book won’t work for me so I’ll need an older format, azw?

I know that I download the book from browser then import into Calibre, what I don’t know is how to ensure that the file I download isn’t KFX format. My understanding is that the format depends on the device (ie eink Kindle) selected - please correct me if I’m wrong here. So my question is which eink Kindle do I need to have registered to ensure an ebook about to be released can be downloaded onto my computer using the browser in azw or whatever the older format before KFX is?

Any Kindle except the Scribe, K1, K2, DX, and DXG.

Books download from the browser for transfer via USB are never in KFX format.

What happens if you own a Scribe and select that as the device the eBook is for? Do you still get KF8 or do you get KFX?

Out of curiosity, how are you selecting a Kobo Sage as the destination for Download and Transfer Via USB?

Assume you mean Scribe. Yes, still KF8.

That's good to know, though it's not an economical option just to be able to download for PC. Also some of the Scribe features only work on Amazon supplied KFX. It's very locked to its own Amazon eco-system compared to any other note taking solution.
