No, the headache of importing into ADE 2. I always forget the process to follow on the rare occasions I buy from Kobo. Which reminds me, I must cancel an Amazon pre-order, and transfer it to Kobo. I might nip over to CEX at the weekend and see what Kindles they have in stock (that and the other local tech stores).

What kind of thing do you think I usually read that I want KDP Select exclusives? If I want something smutty, I go for something literary, thank you very much!

Getting the key is not an issue. It's only the later KFX DRM that can't be removed. Not a problem if the book isn't KFX. See method 5 in the opening post.

Maybe the DRM schemes are regional, since I can still download and remove the DRM from KFX books. I bought three books this week, and I was able to have the DRM striped from the KFX version for all of them. Two of those were published before 2018, but one is from 2020.

If you are downloading with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.26 or earlier, you're getting the older KFX DRM which can be decrypted.

There's also Obok DeDRM for kepubs.

The main problem with going away from Amazon is loosing access to my purchase history. Buying elsewhere involves checking Calibre before purchase just to make sure I haven't already got the title.

That's what I've always done. Amazon doesn't always warn you, at least it hasn't warned me on several occasions. Usually because the ISBN has changed.

I have a book I purchased on Kobo. Then it was removed and promptly re-posted (I think a new publisher) and now appears unpurchased in the store.

I mean that Kindle app versions and e-ink Kindle firmware released since then use the newer KFX DRM. You can still remove DRM from KFX format if you use Kindle software older than that.

It has nothing to do with the date the book was published or downloaded.

Sorry for a probably stupid question, but having read through this thread, there is so much information, I'm unable to locate where this is discussed.
I am considering purchasing a used Kindle reader soley for the purpose of downloading books I purchase in the future. Unfortunately, I have never used one and have no idea what version (Paperwhite?/Keyboard?/other?) that could be used for the download and transfer process. I'm kind of overwhelmed by the different types of devices and generations. I really would not want to buy one that's too old, or the wrong type.
BTW this thread has been amazing. Thank you so much for all the information.

Recommendation seems to be Paperwhite 1 (5th gen), but if you read a lot of image-heavy books you may instead want a 3rd or 4th generation due to image quality/plugin limitations.

Pretty much any Kindle eInk ereader that can be registered to your name can be used. You might want to get an older Kindle if you want to be able to copy books from the Kindle to your computer but I haven't been paying much attention to that part of the discussion.

Please note that download and transfer still works for purchased books but no longer works for Kindle Unlimited, Prime Reads, etc.

The image solution may be very simple. If the eBook is image laden and available in ePub, buy the ePub edition.
