Off topic question. How often do you guys rip books? I usually wait a couple weeks in between each book to avoid getting banned.

I can rip , i. e. download and transfer, books that I have purchased as often as I like, no restrictions

Music, movies , audiobooks , games all have downloadable solutions that Google can find in minutes.
It's strange that the smallest and simplest digital files are the best protected , as at now

We don't, if by "rip books" you mean illegally copying rentals.

Or if it means making a deDRMed copy of a purchased book and return the original for refund. Never. Return the original, I mean. I buy so many books I would get banned immediately, if I did that, even if I was tempted (which I'm not).

That shows the DRM/lack of it, not whether the book is KFX-only.

I was afraid of that. The downloaded file is an .azw3 file, but DeDrm processes it in an instant, meaning no actual stripping of DRM occurs. I'll just stick to Kobo from now on. I've already made the transition a year ago when Amazon changed their billing practices, but I had some digital credit. They lured me in and got me.

I must have missed the memo that stated that you want to steal KU books. I'm not sure why everybody's assuming that.

However, I don't know what you mean by getting banned. I *used* to strip my Kindle purchases of DRM about once a week, but I've done it moments after I purchased the item day after day, too. Now that's not possible with the changes made this month on Amazon's server side.

I don't think they mean KU books; I think they mean returning a purchased book for refund after making a deDRMed copy of it. You can get banned for excessive returns.

And yes, that's stealing too, of course.

It's still possible if you have an eink Kindle on your account.

If it's an AZW3, then it should be fine. Ask over at noDRM's gitHub.

eta: and if you have an E-ink Kindle

eta again: comics and manga are usually non-kfx even from the latest Kindle for PC/Mac

My readers are Sony which I love and I am now not sure what to do with the new restrictions on Amazon books from Jan 3rd. It has been mentioned that you can get them into Calibre with a specific type of Kindle.

I don't know anything about the Kindles as I have always avoided them like the plague but it looks like I am going to have to buy one so that I can import my books to Calibre.

My question is what Kindle should I buy to do this?

Also, would I be able to copy my own books from Calibre to the Kindle if I should want to read them there (mainly epubs but can be converted in Calibre if needed) or would Amazon know these were not bought or downloaded from them and delete them.

Any help would be appreciated as I really don't want to read my books on a Kindle.
