Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 and KFX in calibre

No. You need to configure the deDRM plugin. With the app, that was automatic, but not with an actual Kindle.

It is possible to do what you want to do. You need to read the instructions for the DRM removal plugin as it applies to books obtained for a kindle device. (Providing detailed DRM removal help is not allowed here on MobileRead.)

Go to Amazon "Manage My Content and Devices".
There will be a list of ebooks you bought.
Each title has three "buttons" on the right.

Deliver or Remove from Device
Mark as Read
More actions

Select "More Actions" and one option is to
"Download & transfer via USB"
(the second one, under Delete, for me).
Then it asks which Kindle

This only works for ebooks you bought and an eink Kindle registered to your account.

Also some kinds of ebook (fixed layout) can only be bought if you have a fire/app registered. So I deleted such "devices" (and Cloud reader) which means I only have the eink Kindles on my account and thus can't accidentally buy fake ebooks (fixed layout are not true ebooks because they won't work on smaller screens).

In addition to what Quoth wrote there are many books for which the Download & Transfer option will not be available. Some possibilities are books in Arabic or Indian languages, books borrowed from Kindle Unlimited, free book samples, many textbooks, and many English language books published in India.

If you have an e-ink kindle registered to your Amazon account and are not seeing the Download & Transfer option for a particular book you can post a link to the Amazon listing for the book and someone can look at it to see if it falls into a non-downloadable category.

Thank you all! I added the serial number before but it didn't work, I think what I missed what was to actually save it as thats a bit easy to overlook... Thanks to you I retried and now it worked, even for the new 2023 ebooks! So happy to have this up and running again, thanks a lot!

today it is also all of Prime reading that has the " unavailable to download" tag

If it's an E-ink Kindle (not a Fire), then you're just missing a step which isn't necessary with Kindle for PC. That's all I'll say here.

What Amazon should have done all along for borrowed books. I doubt they will disable it for purchased books. Although you never know or they could change it to a DRM we can't remove. One should always backup purchased books asap if one is inclined to.

what i see is a rolling program of changes, over the last 2 weeks

not a single sudden change

don't want to give them ideas really, but since my PW3 handles kfx, why is my download and transfer( to that device) file not a kfx zip

Blocking Download & Transfer for Prime Reading makes sense. It is more or less an advertisement for Kindle Unlimited. They can justify it for both of those because it helps authors get paid.

Perhaps library loans or rental textbooks will be next since they are not purchases. Or they may do the same as Kindle for PC and block all books published after a certain date.

Hopefully they will take a break before making further restrictions.

I think that Amazon not implementing Download and Transfer for KFX is a strong sign that they mean to do away with D&T completely. Why implement something new if your plan is to discontinue it anyway?

People actually buying the book properly pays authors. KU doesn't.

There are various categories that are nothing to do with DRM removal that don't use WiFi/Mobile direct to Kindle and have to use Download for USB transfer.

Also it's all nonsense anyway. Zero DRM on Amazon or no downloads to PC would have a marginal affect on piracy either way and none on big pirates.

It might be a mistake to think Amazon actually has a coherent plan.
