Considering Amazon's recent changes to refund policy, I wonder if this was put into place to prevent people buying books, stripping the DRM from them, then returning them.

Possibly. But I thought excessive returns made Amazon block your account, or at least no longer allow you to return anything.

In the meantime until all this gets straightened out with Kindle books; where is the best alternative place to purchase an ebook that Calibre won't have trouble with the DRM?

Or use Google play books, for full books, but not for free samples, there is a download as epub option after purchase.
Not sure what kobo refund policy is, if anything goes wrong, but Google's is fast and automated. |

None of the books on Smashwords have DRM.
Some Amazon ebooks don't have DRM, but only if you get the non-KFX version. KFX always has DRM even if publisher request DRM free. Some Google ebooks are DRM free by publisher request. Not all are epub, some are PDFs. |

Either of the DRMs that Kobo uses can be removed. You can download via Adobe Digital Editions and use DeDRM. Or if you download with the Kobo Desktop app (or with a Kobo ereader), you can use the Obok plugin.

The borrowed ones can be unprotected with Obok only if you sync the e-reader with calibre - otherwise you can't remove the DRM.

That is when I first found out about the update with Kindle software. I purchased a Shawn Inmon book then wasn't able to import it into Calibre. I looked elsewhere but it was only sold on Amazon.

Personally, my view on removing DRM on a borrowed books is that it is repugnant. Basically, I don't own a borrowed book and should have no need for a backup which is my reason for removing DRM.

a) being able to use KoboTouchExtended to load it onto my device; b) Running the page count plugin on the metadata entry. I delete the ePub from Calibre once it's on the device (leaving behind a book record with a dummy OVERDRIVE file), and from the device once I'm done reading. |

Hi there! Since today it's no longer possible to download and transfer Kindle Unlimited ebooks via USB. The function is not available any longer. For any KU ebook it says "This title is unavailable for download and transfer". I've tried "deliver to device" (where my MAC appears) but didn't work. Any ideas how to manage this?
