I am so sorry if this seems like an obvious question, but I am a little confused about the disable kindle for PC download.bat. I see the folder labled "updates" and whenever I close out Kindle it fills with a new update and the "automatically install updates" gets rechecked. Am I supposed to delete the folder "updates" and create a blank text file named "updates" and just scoot the .bat file under it? Or am I creating a file called "updates.txt" and putting it in the "updates"folder and scooting the .bat file in that folder as well?

This:
C:\Users\Robin\AppData\Local\Amazon\Kindle\updates \updates.txt
C:\Users\Robin\AppData\Local\Amazon\Kindle\updates \disable k4pc download.bat

Or this:
C:\Users\Robin\AppData\Local\Amazon\Kindle\updates .txt
C:\Users\Robin\AppData\Local\Amazon\Kindle\disable k4pc download.bat

Just put the batch file anywhere you want and run it. It will take care of what needs to be done.

Sorry, I had to look up what a .bat file does. I didn't realize I needed to click on it to get it to "run". I thought it was going to be some kind of placeholder for the update. Lol. Figured it out after installing and reinstalling Kindle a couple of times. It works now.

Won't Kindle (Windows or MacOS) work to display fixed-layout KF8?

They locked manga (and I think comics in general) content behind the updated version (right now books are still downloadable with the old version)... Do you think there is any workaround for that right now?

I'm still able to download any manga as a azw and remove drm (at least I got one today and I was able to use calibre to remove the drm), but I think it's almost over for kindle drm removal if there is no workaround anymore. I will start to use kobo if I have to (since I think you can still remove adobe and kobo drm right now) but I'm not sure if it will continue to be possible in the near future.
I'll keep this KindleForPC-installer-1.34.63103 installer for book for now but since I buy more manga than books I had to update.

All known workarounds are in the first post. Don't know how you avoided the latest KFX if you had to download it with the latest version of Kindle for PC.

manga (at least for what I can buy here) don't use KFX yet.

I thought that was the only type that required the latest Kindle for PC. If they are KF8 (or another older file type), I don't know why they would require the latest Kindle app.

As of today, at least in France, the Kindle reader 1.17 (and I'm sure it goes for 1.19 as well) won't open any e-book newly acquired from Amazon (at least for an e-book that has just been published, I didn't try with older ones). Instead it will prompt you to download the latest version. Is that finally the end of the degrees of freedom that used to be obtainable when using earlier versions ? Does anyone have any information, informed guesses or suggestions about this ? Thanks a lot in advance.

If you have eink Kindles, use the Download and Transfer via USB option. No need to mess with the Kindle for PC.

I have the same issue as Jacques Q in post 1600. I've been using calibre and Kindle for PC version 1.17 (i.e., the last version before DRM was supported) for several years now, and I've always been able to buy Kindle books from Amazon, load them up into Kindle for PC, use the download function to download an azw file of the book that does not have any DRM, and then load that azw file into calibre. Today when trying that, I get an error trying to download the book in Kindle for PC, saying I needed to download the latest version of Kindle for PC. I did that, but the downloaded azw file has DRM and will not load into calibre. I went back to Kindle for PC version 1.17, and got the same garbage all over again. So it appears Amazon may have now decided to close up this loophole regarding DRM books. I'm not sure where to go from here. Anybody have any ideas?

Just curious, what books did you two test with? I haven't gotten it on any of my books (both existing and a few freebies I grabbed for testing). Some books are KFX only so 1.17 can't do anything with those.
