The solution at the bottom of the first post has been foolproof at preventing updates for me. Replace the updates folder with a text file, no extension. For Windows, jhowell has attached a batch file which will do this for you.

This has nothing to do with Windows. It's Amazon doing the forced update. Read the first post of this thread as you can find info on stopping the forced update on older version of KindleForPC.

I've tried the batch file in that post and seems to be working okay so far. For everyone's info, that bit says as follows: "The Kindle app can be aggressive about updating itself to the latest version. Even after the option to automatically install updates is deselected the software sometimes will update itself unexpectedly. To block automatic updates under Windows locate the "updates" folder within your Kindle for PC installation and replace it with a file of the same name. The attached batch file ("disable k4pc download.bat") will perform that process automatically as long as Kindle for PC has been installed for single user use. After running this file Kindle for PC will still try to download the new update each time it is restarted, but it will be unable to do so. When running the app if a dialog pops up indicating that a newer version is available always choose the option to "skip this version"." |

The Kindle for PC app checks Amazon’s server for instructions at startup. If the server indicates that a “forced” update is needed then Kindle for PC downloads the installer and launches it. If there is insufficient storage to download and install the update (or the destination folder is blocked) then this process will fail.

I still have the version that allows me to move the books into Calibre (because I read the books I buy on other devices rather than just Kindle/Paperwhite) but I'm having trouble with two books that came out recently (maybe in the last week or so?) that won't download in this version of Kindle for PC. I'm afraid they may not work at all without upgrading - has anyone had this problem (and found a solution?)?
Edit: Crap, I just looked and I have version 1.34.1 - somehow it updated itself without me allowing it (it did ask and I said no, but apparently it did something anyway). Okay - so am I totally screwed now? I still can't read the two books I just bought even in AZW format (they won't download). Last edited by mkelley; 06-10-2022 at 06:45 PM. |

Okay, by reading the first post here I was able to find another way to download the AZW3 book to my computer (since I own a couple of Paperwhites). But I can't find a way to open or convert that book to EPUB (for my preferred reading program on my iPhone - I kind of hate Kindle) as it's digitally protected. I've done this a ton of times in the past but this isn't working now - did something change? (I've been away from Calibre a LONG time - long story but medical issues have kept me from even trying to buy eBooks for a few years).
I'm using Calibre 2.83, if that matters. Edit: Okay, I tried downloading the latest DRM removal plugin (which is on my old version of Calibre but who knows how old that version of the plugin is) and installed it into Calibre 5.21 (on my laptop computer - wife must have had it there) and still no luck with these books. Any advice other than giving up? Edit2: Okay, I should probably just delete this response but maybe it will help others. First post in this thread gave me the info to download the book to my Paperwhite via USB. Took the file and put it into Calibre with the DRM removal program but didn't realize I needed to enter the SSN of my Paperwhite(s) into the plugin. Now all is well and I can convert to a format I LIKE (Epub - works across ALL my preferred readers). Thanks to this forum and the writer of the DRM plugin! Do you still need kindlekey1.k4i?
I have generated it for now, but I am not sure if this is still needed or not. |
