I'm a karma whore. Feel free to practice giving various amounts of karma to me. |

OK, I paid more attention that time and it all seems to be working fine. Thanks!

What are sockpuppets? (Since I've already exposed my forum mechanics ignorance, I might as well continue….)

A sockpuppet is a username created by an existing user of a forum, most often for nefarious reasons (an example would be an author creating a second username to post a "recommendation" of their book on the forum).

I'm confused. So the various new users with suspiciously high Karma are possibly these so called "sock-puppets"? If so, how did that happen? The way I see it, the only way for a new user to get tons of Karma is to be given the same by another user who has significant amounts to give. The latter, then, would be a user who has been around long enough to have accumulated such Karma. And since he/she has accumulated such Karma, wouldn't that imply that this person is a fairly long-standing and/or somewhat respected member of the MR community? So then why would such a person be a sock-puppet? (And yes, I know I'm over-thinking what is essentially an unimportant issue.) Why, thank you. I've always felt that the threat of violence was a far superior motivator than love, kindness or good humor. And on that note, here's some Karma for you. (You're not a sock-puppet, right?) I don't really think it's that weird. Two or three of us regulars could give a newbie Karma for a joke or something useful and their Karma could go to upwards of 100,000 points.
