@neilmarr: I would vote no to getting rid of 'karma'. I think you're right that it doesn't fulfill it's raison d'etre too well. It has been too complicated a concept for that single purpose. But I find that that complication adds a richness to this forum that I would miss if it was removed.

And karma to you for keeping things interesting and healthy around here by bringing unsavoury topics to light. It is much appreciated on this end.

Karma has become utterly meaningless in the two and a half short years I've been a daily visitor and contributor here (not because I came here), and this thread has become silly enough to prove it. If negative karma was possible, I'd no doubt lose my own immediately through this single post alone.

This thread must have generated enough wasted karma to devalue the system to the extent that it has now been proven to be a less than useless guide to a member's true value to our group.

I tend to welcome all newcomers (no karma potential) only offer technical advice when I can (severely limiting my contribution to such threads) and comment very seriously and, I hope, constructively where I can offer sound assistance in my own specialised field (and as has been mentioned, that attracts no brownie points). I ignore threads that are frivolous and not e-reading specific (I don't want or need to know what's in your wardrobe or in your glass or on your dinner plate or what someone's favourite soup recipe is) and those as the threads where worthless karma seems to be spawned.

Maybe someone should post a simple poll (I'm far too busy to do it myself) one quick question 'should karma be scrapped'. Two options only; 'yes' or 'no'. No invitation to explain why (that's already been covered here and in earlier threads on the subject). Then mods should take note of the result and act upon it.

My own vote would be for 'yes' it should be scrapped because -- well intentioned as it was -- it has become abused and is utterly useless in terms of a member's true value to the community here.

Best wishes and heart-felt karma to all ... but not in numbers and not in this (I believe) redundant thread. Neil
I understand your point but disagree. I love receiving karma and it certainly has never felt frivolous to me. I've stated opinions that have seriously PO'd members - but receive a wave of Karma in response. It's not the points that the "point," it's the comments from other members.

Maybe you are much less emotional than me but I am touched when a member gives me karma and leaves a note - sometimes it's a thank you for a comment, a news article, or a simple "you really made my day a little brighter."

It's good to be serious - and I've given much karma to Worldwalker in appreciation for his in-depth, well thought out, serious posts - but it doesn't have to be serious all the time.

All work and no play can make Neil a dull boy.

This has been a really interesting thread. I never would have guessed that it would garner so much attention. Perhaps I am a bit too laissez faire...dunno.

As someone who has inexplicably benefited from the largesse of others despite being here a relatively short time, I do enjoy the karma system. Still, if it were to disappear tomorrow, I am not sure how much I would miss it.

But I will continue my personal practice of throwing out K to folks who make me laugh, who post a clever turn of phrase or who simply make me think, "Huh...".

FWIW...

Does anyone else have the same hang-up?
Exactly the opposite...I find that, while I always like receiving karma from anybody, to receive a "$1 tip" from new folk (whether new to MR, new to me, or new to karma) is the time when karma means the most to me. I understand your feeling, don't get me wrong, but I think it might be a feeling you can let go. You, I, we, who care for the giver's intent behind the pressing of the karma button, appreciate it and its written thoughts for the simple feeling of appreciation, care, support, thanks, camaraderie, friendship...

Cheers,
Marc

No, no, just stop it, Mr. Phogg. Some of us have these songs on the devices we're using to write this very sentence, and pretty soon I'll end up wasting away the morning dancing and singing along to Ça Plane Pour Moi, its covers, and its Jet Boy Jet Girl origins, or perhaps the many variations of Popcorn also held in my music library.

No karma for you!

Cheers,
Marc (oh, okay...I can't stay mad at someone who so readily quotes Falco )

I have no clue what is this karma about and how does one get it. I very well know the meaning of this Sanskrit word.
