I heart karma, I think it's cute. I give Karma to people who make me laugh, who make really good posts, and who even make really good posts that I don't agree with but are not insulting and well thought out.

I admit I also "pump" K to people who contribute a lot to e-booksciety in general be it as coder of tools, book contributor etc. when I don't forget it

I give karma to any posts that are informative, well though out (whether I agree or not) and ones that are funny. I also give a lot of karma in the Reading Recommendations forum. I've given Karma to people that just seemed to need a pick-me-up because something bad happened in their lives. I try to give karma to the people in the Calibre forum that are extremely helpful as often as I can.

What I would like to see is who I have given karma to, and for which post I gave it to them for. I'm here at MR while at work everyday (shame on me) and sometimes it gets busy and I forget if I've given karma to some of the great posts I've read throughout the day.

It should come as no surprise that people have different definitions of "Meaningful contribution." If I am having a bad day and beppe makes a joke in the What are you drinking thread that makes me smile, he gets karma. I also give Karma for posting books in the free book threads because I appreciate the work those folks do. I give Karma for posts that respond to something flame worthy in a calm manner and help put out a flame war.
