This (v6) ran OK on a couple of files (got the Success! Enjoy!) message & no error messages - But Calibre (6.29) chokes on them, imports them OK but will not display or convert format - (K4pc opens & displays them OK)

Am I missing a step somewhere here?

Edit:-
Doh!
By sheer chance the two free books I chose to test this on are both Topaz (TPZ0) at start of the file, checked several more with hex editor none were - works fine on those

Reading the posts I thought I would get a message from skindle if they were Topaz

Thank you for the update. I thought I was doing something wrong when I got the cygwin error. I did have to play around with the command line to get it to work. It's been a long time since I've messed with command line functions . I like that your solution does not directly depend on the kindle4pc program.

And thanks to all that have worked on these fair use tools! darkreverser, i<3cabbages, labba, skindle and anyone else that I have missed:

The ability to read ebooks that I have purchased on whatever hardware I choose (now and in the future) is very important to me. Hopefully this work will also lead to tools to convert the dreaded Topaz format as well.

No. You cannot purchase software to legally remove DRM from eBooks.

What he said. You *can* find python scripts on the Internet which will allow you to do so, but so many countries have made doing so illegal that you have to be willing to 'break the law' to use them. Of course, using them also ensures that no matter what happens to the Kindle and the various Kindle formats, you'll be able to enjoy your purchased ebooks for as long as you want.

So it is up to you.

As long as the resulting files are for personal use only and you do not distribute them I think you can be sure that you will not be prosecuted. What amount would the damages be, 0.00? And prosecute their most loyal customers when there are not even imaginary damages? They would be laughed out of court. No harm, no foul.

Amazon got their first ebook sale from me. I was reading an ebook of questionable origin and I noticed it was suffering from partial encryption which I understand is typical of Mobidedrm .5 or below.

I thought that this would be the time to try K4PC and Unswindle. I downloaded the sample chapter used Unswindle on it and the resultant chapter was error free.

The price was $6.39 so I bought it. I ran Unswidle on it. I changed font size, formatting and file type in Calibre. Now that it was just like I wanted it I transferred it to my PRS-505.

Without the available tools I never would have purchased this book from Amazon.

now that with SKindle we have the ability to deDRM the TPZ DRM is it now possible to convert the TPZ file to MOBI so we can use other applications to read our books?

Unfortunately not yet. The encryption has been decoded, and the parts of the format can be decompressed. But that still leaves figuring out what the format is and how to convert it.

The early signs aren't good. It looks like it's a format concerned with the placement of glyphs, rather than rendering a stored text stream.

I'm still holding out for a stored text stream. I base this hope on the fact that if you search for a word in a Topaz file, the search results show the hits in the context of the surrounding text stream, just like a MOBI file. It seems like a lot of work to recreate a text stream from the glyphs for search results.

In comparison, searching a PDF file shows the results in the context of the document. If Topaz were modeled on PDF, it seems like the search results would be shown in the same fashion.

need to start reversing the K4PC to see how it uses the file itself to make a presentation of a TPZ file....
